Viva Voce

September 2014     News from Social Impact Studios

Welcome to the redesigned...

A few years ago, Design for Social Impact changed its name to Social Impact Studios to better reflect our mission to promote important social issues in really creative and compelling ways. Since then, we've expanded how we work - and who we work with - to fulfill the promise of a creative place for making social impact. Now, our "Studios" provide a lively homebase where artists & activists can collaborate, learn and do the work together - whether they are clients, peer groups, field staff, interns, or folks who stop by for a visit.

It's exciting to share the latest info in this redesigned e-news - now named Viva Voce. In Latin it literally means "the living voice" - but is more commonly translated as "by word of mouth." Those two sentiments are a perfect blend of what we hope to accomplish as we communicate, promote and celebrate important social issues together. Here, you'll read about the latest projects, hosted "impact guests," upcoming events, people, and work opportunities - all examples of how Social Impact Studios now works as a creative hub to call attention to the most important work around.

Please stop by to see for yourself or spread the word (or both!).  We still believe that a healthy, happy and peaceful world is only possible if we are creating it together, so we look forward to seeing you in person - the Studios are open!

We are happy to have Put People First PA as an "Impact Guest" in the Studios. As an all-volunteer organization without one office, Put People First has access to creative space and equipment that helps them organize, train and meet to do their critical work of advocating for basic human rights. Right now, they are busy planning for their 2nd Membership Assembly on 9/27 & 9/28 for activists statewide.

Creative Associate
Spring/Summer 2014

Jaamal Benjamin

Our seasonal Creative Associate position brings new talent into the Studios to make a social impact - and gives us both the opportunity to learn from each other. We were lucky to have Jaamal Benjamin join the team for this 4-month post in Spring/Summer to work in all areas of Social Impact Studios, with a concentration in visual design.
Learn more about the experience from Jaamal's perspective here.

Artist-in-Residence

Phil Carter

There are a lot of ways to inspire people and music is one of them. As Artist-in-Residence, Phil Carter explores the reaches of sound and how it reflects the world around us through composition, recording and live ensemble exploration. His collaborative free-music project B9MU6 makes its studio home within the Studios. You'll hear his recorded pieces at our Open Studio Party on Oct 25 and you can listen sound samples here.
