DARLENE MELLEIN

DARLENE MELLEIN will be the guest speaker at our general meeting on Friday, September 26, 2014.  (MatJames Metson was originally scheduled but cancelled his engagement due to personal family issues.)

Darlene is a highly awarded, self-taught artist who studied with and was influenced by the likes of Frankyn Liegel and Katherine Chang Liu.  Both were instrumental in helping her develop her artistic voice and personal style.

A California painter living in the San Fernando Valley, Darlene is an intuitive artist who paints in various media and very often includes elements of collage in her work.  She approaches a blank canvas with an abandon and boldness that convey humor, freedom and imagination.

An Urban/Primitive theme underlies most of her work.  Darlene's paintings are her commentary on societal dysfunction -- from primitive man to the alienation of the modern.

Although she flirts with the dark side and has a fleeting affection for it, humor infuses her view of life and informs her art, resulting in an intuitive style that she calls "Alternative Social Realism."

Darlene creates simple non-specific primitive figures suggesting Everyman, resulting in an Outsider sensibility because of her take on the world she is conveying, and this is a natural for her personality.  From this perspective she transforms the real into symbols, both archetypal and personal, which occur and repeat like the doodlings of a private and primal dream.

Darlene Mellein's graduate work in Literature at UCLA focused on Women's, African American and Chicano literature -- the disenfranchised.  Today, Darlene traces the roots of her paintings to that earlier work; her inspiration comes from the underlying stories of various cultures, their triumphs as well as alienation, along with their colors and symbols.  Drawn to the ordinary experiences of life, there is a narrative quality to Darlene Mellein's work, which she sees as observational and sometimes biographical.
