October 10 - Friday for the Arts in Old Towne

During this October 10th's Friday for the Arts
, we have  a Tribute to Joseph Cotten at the Sol Cooper Gallery and plenty of other action as well, with ten separate musical acts performing, and new exhibits opening in several venues.

Petersbug's new Art Trolley has arrived, and has stirred up a great deal of excitement even in anticipation. It will carry passengers free of charge around a Downtown loop running on a route that will include stops at Neptune's and Wabi-Sabi using Sycamore as the spine. It will therefore link most of the major attractions of Friday for the Arts! with each other and with parking. For now, the Art Trolley will run from six pm to 9:30 pm. It should be fun both to ride the new Trolley Bus, and just to watch it spin around the Downtown area. Check it out! Getting there is half the fun!

International Film Festival in Petersburg

Tim Reid's Legacy Media Institute's 2nd International Film Festival will be held for three days throughout the Petersburg community, October 17-19.

In celebration of the art of filmmaking, the Festival will present an international showcase of culturally diverse films, while providing local, national, and international filmmakers a forum for their work to be viewed, appreciated, and discussed. The Festival will serve as a vehicle to initiate open dialogue on issues and ideas that build community and cultural awareness and appreciation.

The three day International Film Festival will feature a diverse array of films, film discussions, spoken word, musical events, and a Festival block party at a variety of venues in the city of Petersburg and at Fort Lee. Screenings will include a complement of over 30 short and feature length films from a select group of directors and producers from over 10 countries. Music performances and music’s relation to filmmaking and “culture-defining” will be presented throughout the Festival.

Civil War 150 Legacy Project visits Petersburg

The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission and the Library of Virginia have partnered to create a state-wide online collection of original Civil War manuscripts that still remain in private hands. The Civil War 150 Legacy Project: Document Digitization and Access focuses on manuscript materials created during the period 1859-1867 that reflect social, political, military, business and religious life in Virginia during the period of the Civil War and the early period of Reconstruction. Citizens are encouraged to bring original family materials to be scanned and included in the Project. Scanned materials will be made available on the web via the Library of Virginia web site and the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission web site.
