Social Media and Student Identity Theft

Today’s college students are part of the most technologically savvy generation yet. While this greatly enables their ability to be global citizens through increased access to things such as research and communication tools, this enhanced information sharing can also leave them vulnerable. Does your student’s social media habits leave him or her vulnerable for identity theft? Read more

Preparing for Midterms

Midterm exams can be a source of stress for many college students, especially for those who may be experiencing them for the first time. Wondering what to expect, handling the volume of information, and organizing their time can seem daunting. Recognize that your student may be preoccupied with preparation, and may need “some space."

However, there are ways in which parents can support students during this time in the semester cycle, helping them to reduce and cope with midterm stress. Starting exam preparation early, using a daily planner, scheduling work sessions, setting realistic goals, and taking study breaks to relax can make a positive difference.

The Counseling Center can also assist students who become over-stressed due to academic or other demands. Students can receive up to eight counseling sessions per semester at no cost. The  Office for Students With Disabilities is another resource for support and accommodation.

Midterm Grade Reports

Fall midterm progress reports will be available to students in VIP (Vulcan Information Portal) beginning October 24. Parents whose student has authorized proxy access may also view this information in the Parent/Guest Portal. Note: Discussing midterm grades with your student is strongly encouraged as midterm progress may be a good indicator of overall success in a course. The Office of Academic Success offers any student personal assistance to help them get back on track.

Early Registration for Spring 2015

Early Registration for next semester is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 3–7.

It is during this week that your student will register for next semester’s classes. Remind your student to make an appointment with his/her faculty adviser well in advance to discuss academic plans. Students should also check VIP (Vulcan Information Portal) to confirm that there are no “holds” on their account. A hold may be placed on a student’s account for a variety of reasons, including past due payments, fees, fines, and advisement. A hold will prevent your student from registering until the office that imposed the hold has released it. Students who are not ready to register for classes risk not being able to register for the classes they prefer. Note: Students should watch for campus announcements providing further registration details and instructions. View registration dates, times, and helpful tips
