Katie Haywood as Mrs Overall on an Acorn StairliftWe're excited to share with you that Mrs O does make a memorable entrance at one point on a stairlift. Fortunately for us, we've been loaned one free of charge for the week by Yorkshire-based Acorn Stairlifts. Here's Katie Haywood (who plays Mrs O) trying out a similar stairlift at the home of one of the company's Burton customers. You may have seen her in the Burton Mail. Thanks to Geoff Thompson for the picture.

Acorn Starlift’s company secretary, Dave Belmont, said: “We are delighted to help Little Theatre Company with their version of the show in November."

Victoria Wood has also added her thanks to Acorn: "I am delighted Acorn Stairlifts are helping local groups to stage Acorn Antiques The Musical! by supplying a free stairlift. The scene with Mrs Overall on a stairlift is one of the centrepieces of the show."

BADAC Bar Volunteers 2002 to 2014

By LTC Chairman Peter Clemson

When the former Brewhouse Trust went into liquidation in the summer of 2002 (shortly after HM The Queen’s visit), my dear friend, Richard Frost (sadly no longer with us), rapidly enlisted the help of his neighbour, Brian Alston, myself and other “willing” volunteers to put together a bar team which would at least ensure some form of hospitality for the upcoming Mellow Dramatics production of Me and My Girl.

We started on a small scale with a very limited range and were quite daunted by the prospect of facing hordes of audience members, particularly at the always busy intervals. Gradually we expanded our range, tried to perfect our skills and brought in lots of different faces and helpers to assist in making the Brewhouse experience, whether it be at a performance, a gallery opening or any other of the myriad events that take place at the venue, a more enjoyable and friendly experience.

In the last 12 years, the BADAC Bar Volunteers have never missed an event at the Brewhouse and have always offered the service required.

It is with great sadness, therefore, that we have now been told, at very short notice, by ESBC, that our services will no longer be required. In leaving behind our volunteer duties, I cannot let the moment pass without a special thank you to all those people who have given up so much of their precious free time to serve willingly the many thousands of people who have come through the Brewhouse doors during our period of service. Thank you, also to Pamela Anderson MBE, who spent countless voluntary hours operating the coffee bar and being the familiar face of the “tuck shop” for the Saturday Class young people.

Brian AlstonOf course, the biggest thank you and debt of gratitude must go to Brian Alston (pictured right) who has served the Brewhouse Bar with such distinction over the last 12 years – often working hours over and beyond the call of duty to ensure the Brewhouse was never let down. He, alone, has been largely responsible for the way the bar operation has been built over the years into the very friendly and professional set-up that was in place up to the end of August this year.

In saying goodbye to all those years of service plus the friends and colleagues with whom Brian and I have worked, I wish Derby Quad every success in its endeavours to provide our audiences and members with a level of service they have come to expect and enjoy.

Ellie secures first two professional roles

Ellie Lowe

Straight after graduating from the Guildford School of Acting (GSA) this summer, Burton's Ellie Holmes - now known by the stage name Ellie Ann Lowe - has landed two professional roles.

Until October 25 she is appearing in Love Story at the Union Theatre In London before moving straight on to the UK tour of Saturday Night Fever.

Ellie contacted us to say: "I've been offered Connie, first cover Annette and swing in Saturday Night Fever and it wouldn't have been possibly without LTC. It taught me a great deal and I will be forever grateful!"

Ellie played a number of roles during her time with us including Fantine in Les Miserables (School Edition) and Mrs Potts in Beauty and the Beast after joining our youth group back in 2008 when we performed Summer Holiday.

Adam and Alex are official record breakers

Adam Bates and Alex Gill

Congratulations to Adam Bates, Alex Gill and all who supported them over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend in their attempt to set a new world record for the longest-ever squash marathon.

All the witness statements, video evidence and more has now been officially scrutinised and verified and they have been told they now hold the world record. Sadly, this comes too late for the Guinness Book of World Records that will be out this Christmas.

But here's the official proof:

Tip Top Tap with 'Miss Berta' on Saturdays

Tappercise with Miss Berta

We've had such fun rehearsing one of the biggest numbers of Acorn Antiques - Tip, Top, Tap - that it's inspired Heather (who plays Miss Berta in the show) to launch a 'tap for exercise' class - called Tappercise.

It's an idea Heather came up with a few years ago and Acorn Antiques has finally inspired her to make it a reality. The class takes place at 10am on Saturdays at Dethick Hall, Hartshorne, and the cost is £4 per session. Previous tap experience is not essential. You can follow the Tappercise Page on FB for more updates.

Thanks to our Corporate Patrons

We are very grateful to the local businesses who support us as corporate patrons. We're always happy to publicise them on our social media channels and in our newsletter.
Special thanks to Burton web development agency Webb2b, who renewed their support for another year this month. We LOVE their new website with its striking images of Burton's heritage.
Thanks also to The Mug Tug - that great business moored on a canal boat at the Barton Marina (ideal for unique Christmas gifts) - and local pop-up marquee specialists Mini Marquee Hire who have also renewed their support for another 12 months.
If you know a local business that might enjoy supporting our work - please ask them to contact elaine@little-theatre.co.uk for more details.

Story Wells sparks interest in our history

We were delighted to be invited to dig into our archives and supply a couple of pictures for the Story Wells exhibition - which can be seen in The Brewhouse bar, on the stairs and on the first floor - until November 1. You can pop in to see the exhibition any time between 9am and 8pm, Mondays to Saturdays. The coffee bar is open throughout the day at The Brewhouse,  and snacks and lights meals are also being served all day.

Storywells exhibition at the Brewhouse, BurtonThe exhibition marks the completion of a major project that has seen stories and memories gathered about life in Burton-on-Trent in the 1960s and 1970s.

The former Little Theatre on Guild Street - where our company has its roots - cropped up in some of the stories and we were happy to provide a picture of the old auditorium and of a production called The Corn Is Green which featured Philip Bond - who went on to appear in many TV shows - and is the father of actress Samantha Bond.

This trip down memory lane - and the fact that it's our 30th anniversary this year and our 100th production next year - means that we're delighted to have been offered the chance to stage our own exhibition at The Brewhouse in January 2015. Look out for more details in our December newsletter.

Photos from our archives

We've had fun recently posting some photos from our archives on Facebook and asking people to try and remember the production, the date and the actors. For those of you who don't use Facebook, here are a few of those images for you to puzzle over. If you're not sure of the answers you might see some of them in our January exhibition.

Thanks for your continued support for Little Theatre Company. Our next newsletter will be out in December. Meanwhile, you can keep up-to-date with all our latest news on our social media channels, just use the links below.
