FIRST WORD from PASTOR CHIP STEVENS

Thank you for your flexibility this past Sunday as we met for worship in the OC gym. Though it's not the way we would want to worship every week, it really was a unique experience. Special thanks to Clifton Curtis, Steve Gwaltney, Scott Edwards, and others who worked so hard in setting up for us to worship. This past Sunday makes me grateful for a few things: 1) the fact that we had to worship in the OC gym means that we are getting closer to enjoying the Children's Building and other facets of the project, 2) the number of people at FBC who are willing to lend a hand and help out when needed, and 3) the many church planters who have to set-up and take-down equipment each week in order to worship corporately. One of those church planters is Dr. Ashley Austin and his wife, April, in Victoria, Canada. They set up a couple of rooms in a hotel each week for people in the area to have a place to come and have the opportunity to meet Jesus. I thank God for them and the many others like them who are willing to do whatever it takes to GO...with the Gospel.

It really has been exciting to see so many of you attending the Song of Solomon study each week. I really believe that one of the best evangelistic tools is for the world to see Godly relationships. This is one of the most practical ways that people can see the superiority of God. This week, we will be looking at conflict in marriage and how to handle it in a way that honors Christ. Hope to see you Sunday night at 4:55 PM in the OC!

The vote on the budget passed by over 99%. Thank you for participating through voting.

Thank you for allowing us to be a part as we GATHER, GROW, GIVE, and GO together!

Have you joined The City?

What is the The City?
There are a hundred different ways to describe The City, but it all comes down to communication. The City was made to help our church stay connected in a central location, extending our capacity for community and ministry throughout the week, because church doesn’t end on Sundays. The City will help everyone in our church stay engaged in daily life and ministry. It’s a group-oriented social network that’s all about helping our church build deeper community and extend the love of Christ to the world.

Why join The City?
The people and groups in The City are the people and groups who make up our church. Every part of The City is designed to lead our church into deeper community with tools that build connection and encourage growth as we share the light of Jesus with each other and the world.

What is there to do in The City?
Plenty, but the main things are:
  • Connect with people
  • Join Groups
  • Stay in the know with the church calendar of upcoming events
  • Dive deeper through growth tools, prayer requests, share resources, and organize help
Sign up by clicking the banner above. If you have any questions or need help email Bobby D. at bobbyd@fbcstarkville.com.

Mississippi Baptists are very active in mission work all around the world. FBC Starkville is often made aware of personnel needs for trips sponsored by the Missions Mobilization department of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board. Below is opportunity that need volunteers:

2015 Home School Conference

Bangkok, Thailand
February 18-28, 2015
Cost: $1500-1700
Deadline: October 1, 2014

The types of volunteers needed are teachers, home school parents, and men and women with various vocational skills such as construction, mechanics, health care and social service fields. Home school experience is needed for some positions but not required for all.

Baby Bottle Boomerang
Baby Bottle Boomerang Fundraiser benefiting Starkville Pregnancy Care Center, at the end of our worship service Sunday, October 5, as you exit the sanctuary, we will be distributing baby bottles from Starkville Pregnancy Care Center. Help our church make a difference in the lives of young women in our community who are facing unexpected pregnancies by getting your family involved in this project.  We encourage each household to take a bottle home, fill it with coins, currency or checks and return them to the church no later than Sunday, October 26. Your efforts will save the lives of unborn babies and help their mom’s learn about Jesus.  Thank you so much for your participation.

Love Your Neighbor in the month of October

During the month of October, FBC is joining with you in showing love to our neighbors and to our Starkville community. Two events are lined up at our church to show love to the neighbors in our community.

Pumpkin Palooza
October 10, 6:00-8:00 pm. This year, we are joining with our neighboring businesses on Main Street in our community-wide Pumpkin Palooza. We are opening our Outreach Center parking lots and encouraging our community to park for free at our facility. As our guests park, their children will be handed bags to take up to Main Street to collect their “loot in” as they visit local businesses. We will also have a tent and table in front of the Van Landingham Building where our guests can pick up bottled water or hot cocoa. Needed for this event: a few people to assist with parking, and several to “man” a table. If you are interested in helping please contact Charity Gwaltney.

Light the Night
October 31: Location—Your House. This year, in lieu of Fall Festival, FBC is asking you to stay home on Halloween. That’s right! Stay home and meet your neighbors and minister to them. We are asking for 15-20 homes throughout Starkville to serve as “host homes” for Light the Night, and their responsibility is to simply hand out a flashlight along with their candy. (You can also put together a simple game in your front yard to facilitate some conversation with your neighbors.) Needed for this event: Homes of FBC members who are willing to serve as a host home handing out FBC Flashlights.

Here are some other ways to “Love Your Neighbor” in October:
  • Prayer walk your neighborhood as a family and pray for those who live around you.
  • Bake some fall goodies (cookies, brownies, etc.) and pass them out to those who live on your street.
  • Invite your neighbors to come to your home for dinner.
  • Practice random acts of kindness: rake a neighbor’s yard or help out with someone’s yard work, put away your neighbor’s trash can, or surprise your neighbor with a potted fall mum.
  • Organize a neighborhood get-together, barbecue, pitch-in, game night, or block party.
  • Invite the neighborhood children to join your children for a play date in your back yard.
  • Be intentional about saying “Hello” to those who live around you. (Rather than just giving them a wave or a head-nod.)
  • Offer to walk their dog, water their plants, or bring in their mail if they go away on vacation.
  • Pay them a visit—just to see how they and their family are doing.
  • Make them a Happy Fall card and leave it on their front door.
  • Take them a book to read.
  • Invite them to join you at FBC one Sunday morning.
  • Offer to babysit for an evening, so that a neighboring couple can have a date night.
  • Be a “good neighbor” yourself by keeping your yard neat and picking up your own trash.
