Cruchet Art Works
Sunday, October 05, 2014, 2:00pm - 5:00pm

Portraits of the First Nations, an exhibition of portraits of Mi’kmaq people, honours the First Nations.
“In this days of celebration of a new nation, we thought it was also important to celebrate the First Nations,” says Dominique Cruchet.

To accompany the photography and painting, a text from Keptin John Joe Sark will also figure in the exhibition. It is a letter written to Prince Charles on the occasion of his visit for the 150 years of the first meeting for Confederation. The photographic work consists of portraits taken in 2009, 2012 and 2014 at the Panmure Island Pow Wow. Some images are printed on metallic paper to recall the Daguerrotype. Paintings by Joan Cullen evoke the geographic and symbolic space of the Mi’kmaq land of Abegweit, Ile St Jean or PEI. Opening and a Ceremony by Keptin John Joe Sark are on October 5 and show will run to October 17.

9) PEI Annual Verbal Abuse Prevention Week, October 5-11, 2014

I have been involved in researching verbal abuse for many years and have had the opportunity to speak with parents, students and staff in schools. In 1994, many provincial school boards and schools in Canada did not recognize verbal abuse. Some had policies recognizing verbal abuse but did not always enforce them. For those who are being verbally abused and experiencing exclusion, emotional and physical abuse in school, it is very real. Sometimes it is ignored by parents and staff.

There in lies the problem. If we as adults and people in the position of power to make change do not take these students seriously, it can lead to more serious problems. They want us to listen, help and protect them. When we fail to do this, it sends a message to others that reporting verbal abuse and other forms of violence and emotional abuse like cyber bullying, is a waste of time. These children and youth then suffer in silence and can commit a violent act or turn on themselves. When that line is crossed and others are harmed, then rights and privileges must be denied. Incident reports should be filed and the number of occurrences should be taken into account and dealt with.

Now that provinces recognize verbal abuse, especially on PEI with its annual Verbal Abuse Prevention Week October 5th-11, 2014,  we should be announcing it in every school. Students must feel comfortable in reporting abuse and action must be taken to deal with it before it escalates.  When we as adults do nothing, we are just as responsible as the “bystanders” that are watching!

Sincerely, Tami Martell, Founder-Verbal Abuse Prevention Week

12) The Master's Wife - A few dates left in the fall tour

Orwell Hall production regroups before fall tour of the Island

(Excerpted from The Buzz, online)

Sept 26, 27, 28, Oct 9, 10, 11
After a series of sold out houses at Orwell, the cast of The Master’s Wife, a theatrical celebration is taking a break before remounting the show for a fall tour of the Island. On the hottest nights of the summer, audiences crowded into the Orwell Corner Village Hall to hear the words of Sir Andrew Macphail’s memoir brought to life on stage through stories, scenes, song and fiddling.

Islanders like their history. Nearly all the spoken words are Macphail’s own and the songs are a selection from the “wallpaper music,”—melodies and words Macphail’s father transcribed onto rolls of wallpaper to teach the children at his school. Fiddler Roy Johnstone adds traditional airs and a sizzling piece of his own called, “the Devil’s Jig.”

Author Marian Bruce attended the show and had this to say, “I don’t know if I’ve ever sat through a more satisfying performance. So many wonderful elements—the amazing actors, the gorgeous voices, the Psalm tunes of my childhood, the fast pace, the nostalgia, the humour…who knew Macphail was that funny?”

Following is a list of dates and venues for the fall tour, with the phone number to call for ticket reservations for each of the seven venues: September 25 at Orwell Hall (651-8515); 2); September 26 at the Cotton Centre, Stratford (569-2564); September 27 at the Courthouse Theatre, St. Peter’s Bay (961-3636; 961-3004); September 28 at the Presbyterian Church, Summerside (436-5154); October 9 at Beaconsfield’s Carriage House, located at the corner of Kent & West Streets, Charlottetown (368-6603); October 10 at Britannia Hall, Tyne Valley (831-2662); and October 11 at Bonshaw Hall (675-2855). All shows are at 7:30 pm.
