“We live in an age wherein despite immense scientific and technological advancements, we are witnessing the disintegration of many other important aspects of our lives. Therefore our focus today should neither be on dependence nor non-dependence, but on interdependence. This is because humans, animals, plants, the earth, the sky, the atmosphere, the sun, the moon and all the planets are all interdependent.”

Sydney MA Centre Newsletter

October - December 2014

Dear Friends,

It is with great joy that we are able to announce that Br. Shraddhamrita will be back in Sydney from Nov 4 to 9. Check the tour blog or calendar below for all the details. Swamiji again will be giving talks as he has done on previous tours. This time the talks will be based on the text Drig Drish Viveka and subtitled “Discovering Your Infinite Potential.” There will also be a retreat in the beautiful surrounds of Bulli national park. To complete the tour Swamiji will also be conducting the Bhagavati Seva Puja on Sun 9.

Amma has sent Swamiji to Australia to inaugurate the newly completed hall at the Melbourne Ashram. This celebration will be held on the 4 October. Through Amma’s grace the Melbourne Ashram continues to evolve, develop and grow. It is very much the jewel in the crown of Amma’s Australian satsang.

Please come and join us for Amma’s Christmas satsang on the evening of the 20 December. Our final program for the year will be the Eco Meditation in Centennial Park.

ARCHANA (Worship through the repetition of the names of God)

Amma has always given great importance to the chanting of the Sri Lalita Sahasranama (the thousand names of Devi).  It is one of the most sacred texts for the worship of the Absolute as the Mother of the Universe, rich in meaning.

Amma says that when the Lalita Sahasranama is chanted daily, with devotion, all obstacles are removed towards the path to liberation. The power gained by this archana cannot be achieved by any “priest or mantravadin in a thousand years of worship”.

Chanting of the Lalita Sahasranama on a regular basis can lead to material and spiritual benefits, such as:
  • Prosperity to family and peace to the world
  • Removal of the effects of past mistakes
  • An awakening of the energy in every nerve of the body
  • Provision of the basic necessities, including food
  • Reduction in the intensity of suffering
Amma emphasises that the main purpose, however, of chanting the Thousand Names of Devi is “to awaken the divine essence in ourselves, not to propitiate some divinity up above”. She says that when we chant each mantra of the Lalita Sahasranama, that quality is awakened in us (for example, Sri Matre Namah, the first mantra: Salutations to the Mother, nurtures in us the qualities of patience and forgiveness).

“Each of the thousand names is as important as the mantras in the Upanishads. When we chant them we are unconsciously elevated to a more expansive nature. The Sahasranama is for elevating us from the culture of a housefly to divine. That is true satsang.”
