Marty's Message

One of the best parts of being the dean is the opportunity to get to know so many outstanding alumni. In the past two weeks I’ve had the pleasure to host and visit several of our outstanding alumni. Some who have gone on to lead large businesses or organizations, others have risen to the top of their professions and many have made major contributions to society. They are each highly accomplished; and they each attribute their accomplishments, at least in part, to UW-Stevens Point and to one or more of the professors, advisers, or mentors who helped them along the way.

For Jodie Woodruf '02 (education), CPS’s outstanding alumnus this year, it was Professor Dayle Upham and adviser Maggie Beeber who understood what Jodie needed as an older nontraditional student, and took the time to guide and mentor her.

For Sandy '69 (education) and Ken Falkinham ’68, who met while attending UW-Stevens Point, it was Coach Duaine Counsell who made the impact when he convinced Ken to come back to UWSP after he withdrew early during his freshman year.

For Keith Anderson '85 (business administration), COO of the third largest home building company in the U.S, NVR Inc., it was his involvement on the football team and with Phi Beta Lambda (Future Business Leaders of America), that engaged him; and for Eric Burke '92 (physical education), it was what he learned through involvement on the UWSP wrestling team that helped his success as a principal at Port Washington High School.

These are great examples of how your influence as faculty and staff can help shape our students' lives and contribute to successful careers.

Be sure to read the Monday Message stories about Jodie, and about Ken and Sandi to see how their stories have inspired our students and how they have given back to UW-Stevens Point.

Marty Loy,
CPS Dean
