Keeping you informed about cool bird stuff in & near Central Kentucky.

News of Note

Bravo! to Angela Myers, CKAS Secretary, on her nomination and election as President of the Kentucky Audubon Council. The KAC serves as the unifying body of the six Kentucky National Audubon chapters, promoting discourse and collaboration between the groups. This is the first time in more years than we have record that a member of CKAS has been elected to serve as a KAC Officer. We're excited for Angela and look forward to the helping with projects we know she has in mind. We expect her tenure will lead to a renewed interest in creating a culture of conservation, focusing on environmental issues, education and advocacy. Good luck to her as she steps up to prove Kentucky is "for the birds"!

2014 Swift Night(s) Out

September's CKAS Swift Night Out sure was impressive!  From the fourth floor of the Chase parking garage, we could see two downtown Chimney Swift roosts. In one roost, we counted 275 swifts entering, but in the other roost---located at eye level right across the street with a view so close we could almost swat swifts out of the air---we counted 1,100 swifts!  It was quite a sight.  Video of the 1,100 Chimney Swifts can be found here .

Upcoming Projects:

We have several bird house construction projects on the docket in our near future!  We plan to build ten to fifteen Barn Owl houses to donate to the Ky Fish & Wildlife for them to hang this winter.  We aim to finally erect the Chimney Swift Tower at The UK Arboretum before next Spring's migration.  We hope to build and donate several more bird houses to the Cincinnati Zoo's wetland restoration. And we intend to put together a dozen or so Bluebird Houses for sale as a fundraiser for next year's Bluegrass Birding Festival.  Both Congleton Lumber and Home Depot have been quite generous with discounts on wood, but these projects still aren't cheap. If you want to support our efforts, please donate to CKAS online from November 3rd to December 12th during the GoodGiving Guide Challenge. The birds could sure use your support!  If you want to help build boxes, keep an eye on our Upcoming Events for details!

WALK ETIQUETTE
Not every birder appreciates playback (playing recordings of a bird's song to get it to call back or flush out into the open). Some birders even recommend a total ban of playback of any sort. If you wish to use playback on a public bird walk, first ask your fellow attendees to see if any object. Then, use playback judiciously, playing short, low, and infrequent snippets to coax the shy bird into view.
