Harvest season continues! Stock up today!
Belfast Farmers' Market

Harvest Season!

Reminder: in November, the market moves INSIDE to Aubuchon Hardware Store on Rt 1! You don't need to miss a single one!

And.... we *may* be planning something special for Halloween...
"Special Notice re: dogs at market:
We love seeing you and your pooches every week but it has come to our attention that some of our four-legged friends are leaving special packages on the fields behind the market. These fields are owned and maintained by the Belfast Area High School and are used for their sports exercises.
Not much grosser than running with your eye on the ball and slipping in a pile of dog poop. It's been happening more and more frequently this season and the high school has requested that we support them in their efforts to ask the public to PLEASE pick up all piles. The market would like to go further than that and say "Fell free to bring your dogs (on leashes, per market regulations!), but pick up after your dog if s/he is so inclined to take advantage of the field AND, in the spirit of cooperation, if you see a lonely, left-behind pile, pick it up, too!" Many of us vendors have plastic bags if you forget to bring one on a given day.

The farmers have been too busy to send in much news, but we've finally collected a few bits and pieces:
From Springdale Farm:

We will be harvesting our first batch of fall lambs soon.  We will have roasts, chops, shanks and by the end of the month.  We will only have one batch of mutton sausage this season, which will be ready by next week!  We are fully stocked on a wide array of beautiful Rose Veal roasts including top round, bottom round, rolled shoulder and sirloin roasts.
Even though it’s the end of October, Peacemeal Farm still has a huge selection of veggies.  Everything from winter squash and potatoes to salad greens and kale.  If you are thinking about planting garlic this year, stop by and get your Russian Red or German Red seed garlic.  This is also the week to pre-order spinach and broccoli for freezing.  Send us a message at peacemeal@midmaine.com.

Toddy Pond Farm will not be at the market on 10/24.
Our sweet cow June is due to calf in the next couple of weeks so we are down to just one cow milking right now.
Our yogurts and kefir are available at the Belfast Coop and The Local Variety and Bakeshop in Bucksport.
Thank you to all our awesome customers who made our first year at the Belfast Farmers' Market a lot of fun and a huge success!!

In other fun farm news, our American Guinea Hog sow, Poppy had 4 little piglets this past Friday.
They are seriously about the cutest little pigs ever.  -- Greg & Heide, Toddy Pond Farm

Caitlin and Brad from Appleton Creamery just got back from a whirlwind trip to Scotland and Ireland, where they visited several farms, as well as places of incredible natural beauty. Their awesome apprentices kept things running while they were gone, and we will have plenty of cheese for markets!

Highland Organic

Hey Market Shoppers, catch this weeks special, Pie-in-a-bag for $12!  This is 3# of our frozen blueberries in a bag which is what you need to make a blueberry pie :)  All you add is your spices, sweeteners and pie crust.  If blueberry pie is not your thing, it is still a great deal on frozen organic blueberries.  We will also have 5# & 10# boxes with us and 1# bags of organic frozen blueberries.  Hot blueberry tea will be available to keep you warm while you shop the market, and of course we will have our organic blueberry barque and organic blueberry tea available.  See you at the market!

Haddock

A quick and easy menu idea: Fresh Haddock stuffed with crab cake.

Thaw and divide our crab cake in proportions  equal to the number of haddock fillets. Place haddock in greased baking dish with crab on top of the thick side of fillet and fold tail over the crab. Bake at 375 for 20 -25 minutes until done. Sometimes we like topping each fillet with cream of shrimp soup or a lighter sauce of 2 parts each of butter and white wine and 1 part lemon juice. Basting occasionally during cooking. Note: we like to use a thermometer to test for doneness. It should read 145 in the center of the crab stuffing.
Winter market info: Pemaquid Lobster & Seafood will be joining the winter markets at the Aubuchon Hardware in Belfast and Brunswick Winter Market , in addition to the Bath Winter Market.

Monroe Cheese Studio's season is winding down. We will have plenty of White Gold Yogurt (made with whole unhomogenized Jersey certified organic cow milk) and whole wheat sourdough at our stand through October 31st, at which time we turn into a pumpkin until next May. Thank you to all of our regular (and not so regular) customers for the 2014 season! My yogurt will continue to be stocked at the Belfast Coop through the winter.

You may notice that my sourdough loafs "shrink" as the weather cools in the fall. They always start out as one pound of dough when they are shaped late Thursday night, but the sourdough "livestock" I work are not very active when my bakery space temperature dips much below 70 degrees overnight. Therefore the loaves and rolls do not proof quite as much as they do in the summer, and therefore are smaller but denser. Also, several customers have asked whether my whole wheat sourdough freezes well -- it does. Actually *any* bread that does not have any oils added to the mix (often in the form of milk and/or eggs) will freeze well in an airtight bag (make sure to thoroughly thaw it in the closed bag before you pull it out to cut and/or toast) for at least three to six months.

Half Moon Farm will have a few new items, including:
crabapple jelly from organic FireFlower crabapples
Zesty pepper relish from our own organic produce
100% fruit organic local apple butter
