Vol 1  |  Fall 2014  |  No. 4

Dear Campers, Parents, Staff, Alumni, and Friends,

After a long, hot, dry summer, it finally rained a bit here at the Bar 717 Ranch. Barn Hill and the upper field are back to their familiar shade of green, and Grassy Flats Creek is flowing once again.  Everywhere I look, a faint fuzz of new shoots sprouts beneath the dried stems of last year’s grass.

Autumn’s longer nights and cooler days bring a change in priorities here on the Ranch.  We’ve spent the last month packing up platforms and putting away Program Areas. Now, the first frost of the season will be here any day, and it’s time to prepare the gardens, buildings, and animals for the coming winter.   Mulching planting beds, cover cropping the Lower Garden, draining pipes, and gathering firewood occupy our days.  It is a beautiful time of year, but the nippy morning air hints of the coming change of seasons, adding urgency to the work at hand.

The summer of 2015 will be our 85th year of Camp Trinity on the Bar 717 Ranch.  We think that is cause for a celebration---and so we will!  Mark you calendar for the 85th Reunion and Celebration, to be held over the Labor Day weekend, September 4-7th 2015 at the Ranch.  Everyone is welcome: campers, alumni, staff, parents,  friends and families.  You can sign up to attend anytime through our website at: http://www.bar717.com/enroll/.

85 years of camping equals 85 years of fun, friendships, and memories.   In preparation for the 85th Reunion Weekend, we would like to (re)connect with everyone who has been a camper, a counselor, or a staff member here on the Ranch going all the way back to 1930, so if you know someone who might want to be on our mailing list, please refer them to us here: http://bit.ly/bar717campservations.

All the best to you from all of us here on the Ranch,

Kent Collard, Director

Did You Know ... ?

…that 2015 will be our 85th summer of Camp Trinity on the Bar 717 Ranch?!!!!  We are looking forward to celebrating this milestone with all of you at the Ranch over the Labor Day weekend, September 4-7th, 2015.  Campers, parents, alumni,  family and friends are all welcome.

…that construction on the new wood-fired pizza oven was completed in August? We’ve tried it and it works GREAT!  We are looking forward to cooking many delicious pizzas next summer and for years to come.

…that Wilbur and Wallace, our two bottle fed Jersey steers,  have been out on the range with the other beef cows?  No more cushy Barn Hill livin’ for them—and they are doing great.

…that about half our herd of horses will be spending their winter away from the Ranch?  Several returned to UC Davis where they will be used for beginning Western lessons, and a number of others went home with Camper families. More horse news in the horse report.

…that our Caretaker Geoff is continuing to milk Krystal the goat and has been making delicious goat milk feta cheese?

…that it rained 1.5 inches in the last week of September?  That’s more rain then we’ve had since last March.  We are happy to report that all the pastures have turned green and the creeks are running again.

…that Music Camp was a ton of fun, and that we’ll be offering it again next summer?

Summer Horse Report
by Casey Zarnes

For those of us who have yet to meet, my name is Casey Zarnes and I joined the staff here at camp after relocating to Hyampom from the Bay Area of CA last year. I’ve spent my life studying the natural world and working with horses, and couldn’t have imagined a better place to land than the Bar 717 Ranch! Read the full report on our blog.

Camp Trinity, 1938
by Robin C. Harris

“Agoutapflah.” That was the nonsense word that campers used to greet each other in 1938. Funny, the things you remember.

This story begins the previous winter of 1937-38. I would not turn five for three or four months yet, but I knew ... Read More
