Proposed Griffin-Spalding Airport Closer to Reality
Oct 2 – On Thursday morning, GDoT officials informed Griffin-Spalding Airport Authority Chairman Dick Morrow that the proposed new airport received FAA approval.
"We're still waiting on written, official confirmation from the FAA. Once we get that, the [Griffin-Spalding Airport] Authority can move ahead," said Dick Morrow, Chairman of the Griffin-Spalding airport Authority.
Upon formal receipt of FAA approval, the Griffin-Spalding Airport Authority will authorize consulting firm MBaker Corporation to being work on the Airport Layout and Design engineering plan. Concurrently, the Authority will issue bonds to secure funds for the 10% match necessary to receive FAA funds. Once funds are received, the Authority expects plans to begin purchasing property this January.
City, county, and airport authority officials approved the local project late this summer. The proposed airport will be located off of Hwy 16 East and feature an expanded 5500 ft runway capable of servicing 94% of the aviation fleet. Once the new airport is opened, airport officials plan to sell the current airport site for private development. The new Griffin-Spalding airport is expected to open in 2022.
