Annual Meeting shows a strong network

The ECCI building was buzzing with ClimateXChange projects as members from across our network met to discuss their work and how we are delivering evidence for Scottish Government policy development.

Guest speaker Louise Heathwaite, Chief Scientific Advisor Rural Affairs, Food and Environment, Scottish Government, praised CXC as a frontrunner in engagement between science and policy. She also outlined the challenges and opportunities for the centre as the Scottish Government develops its next five year strategic research plan.

Scottish native woodlands

Continuing on from earlier work on native Scottish woodlands, we have published a report exploring how the principles of the Flexible Adaptation Pathways approach could be applied to native woodland adaptation.

The report lists a comprehensive set of options for biodiversity adaptation in Scottish native woodlands.

Research and Peatlands to 2025
We will gather key stakeholders for a workshop on the proposed Scotland's Peatland Action Plan. The event will fous on:

reviewing ‘what is known’ and ‘what is required’ in terms of research to inform a strategic approach to peatlands up to 2025; and
discussing the possible functions of the proposed Peatland Research Group

The outcomes from the day will inform the work of Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) in finalising the National Peatland Plan following the consultation phase.

Step away from the roast!

Cambridge University research co-authored by CXC Director professor Pete Smith has hit the national headlines warning that eating less meat is "essential" to ensure future demand for food can be met and "dangerous" climate change avoided.

Population growth and the global shift towards 'meat-heavy Western diets' has meant increasing agricultural yields will not meet projected food demands for the expected 9.6 billion world population.

Defra's Adaptation Sub-Committee looking for new members

The Adaptation Sub-committee performs an independent assessment of the Scottish Climate Change Adaptation Programme as per the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009. The committee is now looking for applications from anyone who can offer experience in at least one of the following areas:

Action to adapt to a changing climate in practical situations;
Business including finance and insurance;
Economic analysis;
International dimensions of climate impacts; and
Regional and country variation across the British Isles on climate impacts.
