Message from the Mayor
Welcome to the September-October edition of News@ScenicRim.
Council's Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative has hit the ground running with community improvements worth $850,000 to be rolled out regionwide over the coming months. We committed $1 million to this new initiative in 2014/15 and the first allocation of funding will deliver projects in Aratula, Beaudesert, Boonah, Canungra, Tamborine and Tamborine Mountain. Our commitment to the community was that we would deliver a range of infrastructure improvements, some subtle, some significant, to enhance the character of towns and villages throughout the Scenic Rim. But this is not a one-off for this year, Council will be funding this program annually well into the future and I am committed to supporting this initiative over the long term. The Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages program will deliver outcomes which respond to the current and future needs of our community. I am sure the enhancements to infrastructure and the overall amenity of our communities will be embraced by residents and visitors alike.
Bromelton update
I had the opportunity to attend a high-level briefing in Canberra recently, updating stakeholders on the progress of the Interstate Inland Rail Project. The Federal Government has committed $300 million to advance the planning and land acquisition of this new freight line from Melbourne to Brisbane through Central New South Wales and South-West Queensland. Why is this important to the Scenic Rim? It is proposed this new line will intersect with the existing Brisbane-Sydney rail corridor just north of the Bromelton State Development Area at Kagaru, positioning this new industrial precinct on the doorstep of what will be an important crossroads for domestic and international freight. The nation's freight demands are expected to increase by 300% between now and 2050, with rail not road identified as the most cost-effective and efficient means of meeting this demand. Bromelton has been planned as an inter-modal freight precinct, that is a facility able to efficiently shift freight between trucks and trains for delivery or shipping to the Port of Brisbane and interstate, and vice versa. In fact, it will be able to accommodate freight trains up to one-kilometre in length on spur lines off the main rail corridor. To put this in perspective, that's a train stretching 10 football fields. The development of the Inland Rail Project will add a lot of value to the Bromelton equation.
