STOPAIDS took to the UK Party Conference circuit this year alongside many of our members, pressing the case for cross-party support for ending HIV as a public health threat. Ed Miliband, Justine Greening, Lynne Featherstone, Jim Murphy, Andrew Mitchell and Pamela Nash were amongst more than 40 parliamentarians expressing their support. The need for a fresh DFID strategy on global health, with explicit reference to HIV, is at the heart of our asks come May 2015. We are also pressing on the need to look ‘beyond aid’, at the trade and legal barriers which prevent a full and effective response to HIV and AIDS. You can read more here and engage in this work by contacting Ben.

The Student Stop AIDS Campaign  National Gathering is being held at Manchester University this year. The network (which has swelled from 15 to 22 groups) will be holding the event on the 1st and 2nd of November to mark the beginning of Access to Medicines week. A2M week (1st - 7th of November) is an initiative organised by our members UAEM (Universities Allied for Essential Medicine) aiming to raise awareness about access to medicines across Europe. If you are running an A2M themed event during that week or you would like to please get in touch with Saoirse

On Monday 13th October we will be hosting a discussion with one of the leading figures of the international HIV response, Mark Heywood, Executive Director of SECTION27 and one of the founders of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC). Join us and colleagues from TAC for a discussion about the current state of the South African health system and its impact on the HIV and TB responses, between 1-4pm on Monday 13th October at the STOPAIDS offices in central London, or dial in via Skype.  Attendance is open to STOPAIDS members and colleagues - please see our website for more information and feel free to circulate this invitation to colleagues. Please RSVP to danielle@stopaids.org.uk.
STOPAIDS is looking for up to 5 Trustees to join the Board at our AGM in November. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who work for our member organisations to join the Board as we move towards the General Election and post-MDG framework and fulfil our 2013-2016 Strategic Plan. Trustees are responsible for the overall direction of the charity and the proper functioning of the Secretariat. Trustees reflect the diversity of the wider membership, taking on specific "overseeing" responsibilities, bringing their expertise to bear on aspects of STOPAID's work and taking part in 5 meetings a year. If you would like to discuss the roles further, contact Ben Simms. Please click here for information about our current trustees.

National AIDS Trust
Updated advice sheet on dispersal process for asylum seekers with HIV
The ‘dispersal’ of asylum seekers living with HIV to other parts of the UK can create challenges for continuity of clinical care.  The Home Office has in place Healthcare Needs and Pregnancy Dispersal Guidance which is designed to reduce this impact - and since 2012 the policy has been to not routinely disperse people living with HIV away from their clinic.

NAT (National AIDS Trust) is concerned that not all case workers, HIV clinics and support organisations are aware of this Guidance, so they have produced a new advice sheet for healthcare and voluntary sector professionals.  This is an update on the earlier (2006) NAT/BHIVA guide and is also endorsed by BHIVA. Download the advice sheet here.

RESULTS UK
'From Rhetoric to Reality: An Analysis of Donor and Implementing Country Efforts to Scale Up the TB-HIV Response'.

A new research report from  RESULTS UK shows that joint TB-HIV activities are neglected by HIV programs and overwhelmingly carried out by TB programs, and that global guidelines to address TB-HIV have not been prioritized by leading donors and affected countries. Originally developed in 2004, World Health Organization’s (WHO) 12 guidelines on collaborative TB-HIV activities act as global direction on TB-HIV integration efforts. This is the first time a comprehensive study across multiple countries and donors has examined the extent to which these guidelines have translated into policy and programming realities.Download the full report here.
