Tech Development Fund Pre-Proposals Due 10/15

This year, the Technology Development Fund will award winning applications from faculty, staff, or students with up to $100,000 to develop their technology to a commercial endpoint. A submitted invention proposal to UR Ventures is required for an application. Pre-proposals are due Wednesday, October 15, and can be submitted to Omar Bakht, director of New Ventures and Technology Development. Learn more about the pre-proposal requirements.


Unpaid Writing Opportunity at Upstate Venture Connect

Upstate Venture Connect, a non-profit aimed at helping to build the Upstate NY startup economy, is looking for one or more interns from Rochester for the fall and spring semesters to write short pieces about technology startups in and around the area for its website. This position is unpaid. The interns will receive recognition on the UVC website with a link to their personal site or LinkedIn profile. This is a great opportunity for those seeking to build a writing portfolio and connect with the key people leading high-growth businesses in the local entrepreneur community. The interns will submit 2 to 3 pieces per month of 500 words or less. Send resumes and cover letters to Nasir Ali, Founder and CEO of Upstate Venture Connect at nasir@uvc.org


KEY Program Info Session: 10/9

Learn about the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) program at the last information session of the semester on Thursday, October 9 at 4 p.m. in Lattimore 306A. The program offers select students a fifth, tuition-free year of college to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. The program is supported by the College and the Center for Entrepreneurship. Seniors will only be permitted to apply during the fall semester; the application deadline is November 3.


Entrepreneurs-in-Residence Office Hours: 10/14-16

Seeking advice from a seasoned entrepreneur? You can meet with the University of Rochester Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs) on Tuesday, October 14 from 12:30  to 4 p.m.; Wednesday, October 15 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Thursday, October 16 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at the Center for Entrepreneurship. Our EIRs are Michael Wohl ’89, managing partner of ClimateHedge Investments and Greenspace Capital and a serial entrepreneur; and Gregg Steinberg, managing director of Charlemagne Global Advisory and serial entrepreneur. Learn more about the EIRs. Appointments are required. CFE and Hajim Lecture: "From Yellowjackets to Tech Leaders" on 10/16

Join us on Thursday, October 16 at 4:45 p.m. in Gleason 119 for a Center for Entrepreneurship Lecture: "From Yellowjackets to Tech Leaders" with Kevin Mille ’04, senior product support manager at KLA-Tencor and Ankur Pansari ’04, co-founder & CEO of Artillery on the opportunities and demands in the exciting world of high-technology innovation and development. The 2004 Institute of Optics graduates relocated to Silicon Valley upon graduation and quickly embarked on journeys of success in the high-tech and startup sectors. This event, supported by the Hajim School and the CFE, is free and open to the University community and the general public. Attendees must register online in advance or call (585) 276-3500. Those who register will receive a complimentary River Campus parking pass.


TEAM Master's Program General Info Session: 10/15

Learn about the master of science program in technical entrepreneurship and management (TEAM) at a general information session on Wednesday, October 15 at 5:00 p.m. in the Center for Entrepreneurship (1-211 Carol Simon Hall). TEAM students take half their courses in one of nine technical concentrations and half in specialized business courses at the Simon School. The session is hosted by Andrea Galati, executive director of the program. Part-time study is available. PhD candidates can earn the TEAM MS degree along the way to their PhD. RIT Entrepreneurs Conference: 10/24

The Rochester Institute of Technology is hosting its eleventh annual Entrepreneurs Conference on Friday, October 24 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. This year’s keynote speaker is Ted Dziuba, co-founder of Milo.com, an online commerce site acquired by eBay in 2012. Attendees can choose three sessions from a variety of topics such as Crowd Funding, Legal Issues, or Technology Commercialization. Register online.


Registration Open for Buffalo Startup Weekend: 10/24-26

Startup Weekends are 54-hour events where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups (typically mobile apps). Buffalo Startup Weekend will be held from October 24 - 26 at dig – the co-working space on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (640 Ellicott Street in downtown Buffalo). Online registration is now open. Students can use the promo code “STUDENT” to receive half off the registration fee.


Registration Today for Free Online Course, "Technology Commercialization"

The TEAM master's program is offering its first MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) on Coursera. Mark Wilson, lecturer in entrepreneurship at the Simon Business School, will teach the course, Technology Commercialization, Part 1: Setting Up Your Idea Filtering System, which covers ways that high-technology ideas can turn into successful enterprises. Between developing an innovation creed and setting up an idea filter, the course will be great for anyone interested in technical entrepreneurship. The four-week course starts November 1. It is free to sign up and enroll. The course is available to anyone and everyone; Coursera offers courses for free to anyone across the globe.


 

Pre-Seed Workshop Now Accepting Applications

UR Students: Apply to the Student Incubator

The University of Rochester has opened student incubator space at High Tech Rochester, made possible by Simon alumnus Mark S. Ain ’67S (MBA). Student Incubator companies will have access to all client amenities within the HTR Lennox Tech Enterprise Center, as well as access to High Tech Rochester’s Director of New Ventures and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, who can provide additional coaching, mentoring, and connections. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; Rochester students at any level of study can apply. The incubator is accessible on the bus loop. Learn more about eligibility requirements and download an application.
