Meetup and awareness ride
Plus: Green bike lanes, Green Market, and Ken Parker
|
|
<<First Name>>,
On the heels of the first Pedestrian Safety Awareness Walk — an event that grew out of an HPD meetup — we invite you to the next meetup, Monday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the Park Tavern.
HPD meetups are informal gatherings for pedestrian and cycling advocates and enthusiasts to network and socialize. One thing we plan to discuss at this meetup is the first Cyclist Safety Awareness Ride, scheduled for Sunday, October 12 at 7:30 a.m.
Cyclist Safety Awareness Ride to show improvements needed on George Bush Boulevard
The planned route for the safety awareness ride starts at Old School Square, goes north to George Bush Boulevard, east to A1A, includes a stop at St. Vincent Catholic Church, and returns to Old School Square. The ride is scheduled to last 1 hour, from 8:00-9:00 a.m. Riders should meet at 7:30 a.m. at Old School Square.
Human Powered Delray chose this route to highlight the importance of making 2 improvements to George Bush Boulevard: (1) resurfacing the road and (2) adding bike lanes to it, from Federal Highway to A1A. The 2 changes form part of our vision of mobility alternatives to cars.
See details for both events below.
Thank you,
Bruce Bastian, Chairman

U.S. DOT approves green bike lanes
Good news: just last week, the Federal Highway Administration, part of the United States Department of Transportation, approved the City of Delray Beach’s request to use green pavement for bicycle lanes throughout the city. Colored bike lanes are something that HPD has advocated for since its inception in 2013. This approval represents another way to make the City of Delray Beach safer for bicycles. Congratulations, Delray Beach. Let the coloring begin!

Bike2Market: As green as it gets
HPD is delighted to be participating in Delray's Green Market this year. Under the banner of Bike2Market: As green as it gets, we will have a booth promoting a transportation grid comprised of bike and ped pathways, as well as other bike and pedestrian focused activities. Here are some of the activities HDP is planning for this Green Market season:
- A "bike corral" for market shoppers
- Free backpack to carry home your market purchases
- Maps of the proposed Atlantic Avenue Loop with connectors to the beach, Tri-Rail, shopping, and El Rio Trail
- A bike raffle
- Safety helmets
- Historic Delray bike tour maps
- Bike education focused on safety, repairs, and local trails
- Weekly group bike rides in the area
Like these ideas? We need your help to make some of them happen. Visit the HPD booth at the Green Market on Saturday, October 25 to learn more about what we are doing and how to get involved!

Meet HPD
Board member Ken Parker
|
|
Several years ago, Ken thought he had the flu, but three days later, he was fighting for his life. To save him, doctors had to amputate both of his legs above his knees and all of his fingers except his left thumb. Rather than sinking into depression over his enormous loss, Ken became an inspiration to all who know him. "I'm going to do as much as I can, and nothing is going to stop me," he says.
