NOVEMBER 2014

A Note from the President ...

The leaves are turning, a little chill in the air, and we are approaching some exciting CAA events.

First, I would like to congratulate my fellow CAA members who were accepted into "No Boundaries", an open juried exhibit sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Arts Alliance:

Susanne Belcher, Sharon Brooks, Victoria Daniel, Judy Dekel, Lore Eckelberry, Carole Gillin, Sylvia H. Goulden, Richard Herd, Vicky Hoffman, Jo Ann Koch, Suki Kuss, Kwei-lin Lum, Rachelle Mark, Darlene Mellein, Rea Nagel, Toby Salkin and Barbara Tabachnick.

The exhibit, which inaugurated the gallery of the brand new San Fernando Valley Arts and Cultural Center (SFVACC), features 110 pieces by 87 artists.  I hope you will have an opportunity to see the show if you missed the reception, or go back even if you were at the reception to see the art unobstructed by the hundreds of attendees! Exhibit closes November 22, 2014.

SFVACC is where we will be holding our general meetings starting in January -- and it is an inspiration to experience this space with its 18-foot ceilings, surrounded by over a hundred pieces of art!  We will have explicit details well in advance of our first meeting there.

Upcoming in February 2015 is our current membership year's first CAA member exhibit, "A Material World" at the Creative Arts Center Gallery in Burbank CA.  Our juror is Stas Orlovski, who is also our November program speaker.  (A link to the prospectus is included under Exhibits below).

By the time you read this, our "Encaustic Fetish Figures" workshop will have occurred.  I want to thank Rachelle Mark, Mary Guzman and Barbara Schwartz Mathis for arranging, and Rachelle for presenting, our first workshop of the year.

More thank yous, since we could not progress without our team:
Marian Devney for newsletter and blasts
Barbara Jones for programs
Kwei-lin Lum for secretarial minutes
Shawn Riley for exhibits and treasury
Dorothy Tate for scholarship and parliamentarian duties
Christel Thompson for bringing goodies to 2nd-chance table and raffle
Anita Van Tellengen for membership...
and (Your name here???_______________________) for publicity!

I'm looking forward to seeing you all at our November 21 meeting.  Please check with Anita Van Tellengen if you aren't sure whether you have renewed: 818-996-5241 or anitawolvek@me.com.  We want to see you at our future meetings, and you must be renewed to exhibit and continue receiving newsletters.

STAS ORLOVSKI

STAS ORLOVSKI is a Los Angeles artist whose work includes painting, drawing, printmaking, animation and collage.

Born in Kishinev, Moldova in 1969, Orlovski was still a child when his family fled the Soviet Union to Tel Aviv, then Paris, finally settling in Toronto, Canada. He studied art in Canada and the U.S., receiving a BFA from Toronto's York University; a B.Ed from Toronto University; and an MFA from the University of Southern California.

Orlovski's work is often influenced by -- and his materials drawn from -- Russian children's books, Victorian illustrations, Japanese prints, and botanical drawings. He combines these elements with his own painting, drawing, and/or printmaking to create elegant and mesmerizing compositions.

Orlovski's newest work is a multi-media installation combining wall drawing, collage, stop-motion animated projections and sound. "Chimera" is on view at the Pasadena Museum of California Art through January 11, 2015.

Stas Orlovski has exhibited widely in solo shows and museum exhibitions throughout the U.S. His work has been in exhibits at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Pomona College Museum of Art; Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art; Long Beach Museum of Art; the Weatherspoon Museum of Art, and others. He is also featured in numerous public and private collections including the Fine Art Museum of San Francisco; the Houston Museum of Fine Arts; the Phoenix Art Museum; the University of Southern California; and the American Embassy in Brussels, Belgium. Orlovski has been honored with a City of Los Angeles Individual Artist Grant, J. Paul Getty Trust Fellowship, and California Community Foundation Grant.

San Fernando Valley Arts and Cultural Center
18312 Oxnard Street  .  Tarzana CA 91356
10:30 - 1:00

The CAA board is excited to announce that -- beginning January 2015 -- our general meetings will be held at a brand new art center in the San Fernando Valley. The San Fernando Valley Arts and Cultural Center is a beautiful bright space located just east of Reseda Blvd. and directly across from the LA Metro Orange Line's Reseda Station. Some parking is available at the rear of the complex, with more along Etiwanda Avenue (1/2 block east of the center) and at the Metro station across the street. SFVACC is three minutes from the 101 Freeway on/off ramps, from north and south.  Stay tuned for more details.

TAKE A (SECOND) CHANCE
-  and support a deserving student  -

At every CAA meeting, attendees have a chance to pick up "art stuff" at flea-market prices and also participate in an opportunity drawing.

The "art stuff" is an ever-changing collection of art supplies, books, materials and ephemera contributed by CAA artists and laid out on the 2nd Chance Table. Participation in the opportunity drawing offers a chance to receive a piece of art donated by the guest artist as well as quality art supplies.

We'd like to remind everyone that proceeds from both the raffle drawing and 2nd Chance Table go toward CAA's scholarship fund, which grants $1000 annually to a qualified college-level art student. All of your generous donations are greatly appreciated!

There is a basket for donations at the 2nd Chance Table.  Raffle drawing tickets will be sold at the front check-in table.  Wear a handmade name tag and receive a free raffle ticket!

Raffle tickets:     1 for $1.00    /   3 for $2.00   /   8 for $5.00

If you have items that you'd like to contribute to the 2nd Chance table, please contact Christel Thompson by phone or email.
