If you're new to digital scrapbooking, think of brushes as the Swiss Army knife of the digital world because of their diversity (so many to choose from) and their versatility (ability to fit the need at hand). The same brush can be used to create a brightly colored accent or some dark, moody texturing. Or if your layout needs something extra, a little brushwork can add depth and visual interest. They can do just about anything - except open a tin can!

Theme: Making Backgrounds with Brushes
Today, we are hanging out in the background. Our Creative Team is going to show you how to use brushes to create your own unique and spectacular background paper.

When there are so many beautiful papers available in the ScrapGirls boutique, why would you consider designing a custom background paper?   I believe that papers allow you to let your personality shine through in the details you choose.  You can find a variety of styles of texture brushes from bold and grungy to subtle and classy to create the perfect background paper for your layout.

As an example, because I prefer simplicity, I chose two brushes from Amanda’s Essential Canvas Brush Set to add just a touch of texture on a solid background.  I felt that three small areas of texture was just enough to enhance my watercolor rendition of the Forbidden City in China. - Joyce

Using brushes to make a personalized background paper is fun and easy. In this layout, I wanted to keep with a clean and simple look, yet a little more movement was desired for the background paper.

I chose Leafy Brush #4 from Brush Set: Leafy Green. I stamped it several times onto the paper from Chic Instincts Collection Biggie and then adjusted the Opacity and Blending mode to a pleasant level so it would blend into the background and not overwhelm the rest of the layout. The result is a pretty background paper which complements my theme, plus it’s unique and special for my layout! -Amy

For this layout of my son, I wanted a grungy background. But I couldn’t find quite what I was looking for, so I made my own background using Brush Set: Rough It Up.

I tried several different base colors before I settled on navy blue. Then I chose a color that was a few shades darker, and on a new layer, I stamped my brush several times. I repeated the process on a new layer each time until I had a paper that I liked, then I built the rest of my layer from there. - Monica
