Airport Safety Week - Day 1
Monday 29 September 2014

Welcome to Airport Safety Week 2014
Thank you on behalf of the Australian Airports Association and the New Zealand Airports Association for participating in Airport Safety Week 2014.

This is a very exciting time for airports across Australia and New Zealand as we join together to promote key safety messages at airports through tailored airport safety resources.

I encourage you to consider your own personal safety as well as your obligations to provide a safe environment for all airport users. Topics highlighted throughout the coming week will help to enhance the safety culture at your airport by creating a forum for information sharing and innovative thinking when it comes to airport specific safety hazards.

If you have any queries or would like any further information please feel free to contact the AAA team at safetyweek@airports.asn.au

Kind regards
Caroline Wilkie
Chief Executive Officer
Australian Airports Association

Day 1 Theme - Hazard Reporting

A hazard is a source or a situation with a potential for harm in terms of human injury or ill-health, or loss including damage to property (including aviation infrastructure and assets), the environment or a combination of these.

Hazards exist and are created as a result of all daily operations. Hazards are introduced into the workplace by the equipment that is used, the work practices that are adopted and the environment in which the work is undertaken. If not adequately managed, workplace hazards can adversely impact on airport workers, contractors and visitors.

Today, we are emphasising the importance of the timely reporting of hazards as this may prevent a workplace incident or work-related injury or illness from occurring.

The Airport Safety Awards are an initiative that will recognise employees or contractors at airports that work to support a positive safety environment.

Award winners will be announced throughout the week. Congratulations to our NSW winners:

Major Airport - NSW
The Organisational Safety Team
The role of Organisational Safety at Sydney Airport is to provide overall safety advice and guidance including holistic management of the Safety Management System.
An initiative was identified to raise awareness of PPE requirements for airside and to elevate the standard of safety behaviours across all airport stakeholders. A three-stage approach was taken, with the communication of requirements via Safety Alerts and the promotion and enforcement of PPE requirements at airside access points. Safety behaviour has improved to the extent that wearing PPE has become ingrained in the psyche of the airport community.

Regional Airport - NSW
Frank Kenworthy from Parkes Shire Council
Frank’s role sees him as the face of the Parkes Regional Airport and he is generally the sole available representative for the airport and council. Over the past year, Parkes Regional Airport undertook an airfield lighting upgrade project which involved Principal Contractor management, community consultation, CASA compliance and maintaining an uninterrupted passenger service for the community. Frank mentored work safety officers, conducted regular safety compliance checking and held site meetings and briefings with all parties. His contribution to this project ensured the installation and commissioning of the airfield lighting was incident free.

Airport Safety Awards will be announced on the following days:
  • Monday - New South Wales
  • Tuesday - Queensland
  • Wednesday - South Australia and Australian Capital Territory
  • Thursday - Victoria and New Zealand
  • Friday - Western Australia and the Northern Territory

Recipients of the State based Airport Safety Awards at Australian airports are now in the running for the National Airport Safety Award (Major and Regional) which will be presented at the AAA National Airport Industry Awards and Gala Dinner on Tuesday 25 November 2014.

Airport Safety Week Photos
Karratha Airport
To engage the community in Airport Safety Week, Karratha Airport’s Compliance Coordinator Adam Kett has produced an activity book for children from 0 to 16 including colouring competitions, quizzes, word search and brain teasers. Mitchell Cameron, Karratha Airport General Manager said “The airport has been a focus for the community while we undertake our $32M terminal redevelopment. The AAA Airport Safety Week has provide us with a vehicle to engage the community in a positive way.  We will display the kid’s art works on the temporary building hoardings in the terminal so the community has some ownership of the project and they have the safety message reinforced”.
With the first day of the inaugural Airport Safety week now underway, Newcastle Airport have put their full support behind this important initiative. In a fantastic display of commitment, Newcastle have installed large ceiling banners within their terminal, proudly displaying the Airport Safety Week logo. This is a great way of increasing awareness for all airport users about the importance of safety vigilance in and around airports. We encourage all airports to continue spreading the message of Airport Safety Week and follow in Newcastle Airport’s footsteps.

Dangerous Goods

Dangerous goods are items that, when transported by air, can put people’s health, safety or property at risk. They range from the obvious — such as explosives, radioactive items, and dangerous or volatile chemicals such petrol and strong acids — to seemingly innocuous everyday items that can cause problems if not handled correctly, such as aerosols and batteries.

CASA have just launched the
‘Can I pack that?’ - Dangerous Goods App, which is available from the CASA Dangerous Goods webpage. The App is available for desktop, Android and Apple devices

CASA has also created the first ever
‘Least Wanted’ dangerous goods list, which have been illustrated via the posters that were sent out to participating airports last week. This will also be the topic of a twitter campaign after Airport Safety Week, commencing 5/10/14. For more information head to the CASA Least Wanted webpage.

Travelling safely with lithium batteries

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has produced this short educational video to help inform travellers how to carry lithium batteries safely in their luggage.
