Office of the Vice-Principal, Research
  • Congratulations to Devin Kreuger, Director of Research, who has been elected the President of the Canadian Section of the Society of Research Administrators (SRA) International.
Anthropology
  • Professor Esteban Parra is part of a large collaborative group of researchers from Cuba, Spain and Denmark who just published an article in PLOS Genetics (Impact factor: 8.52), describing admixture in Cuba. The manuscript has been viewed over 3,800 times since publication.
Geography
  • The department welcomes two new faculty members as of July: Laura Brown is an Assistant Professor in Physical Geography, and Igor Lehnherr is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Science.
  • Congratulations to PhD candidate Amy Mui from Professor Yuhong He's group for winning the Best Student Presentation Award for "Modelling seasonal landscape connectivity for threatened turtles in a fragmented landscape," at the 2014 International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE) conference held in Alaska.
  • In August Professor Ron Buliung was a featured guest on CBC's Metro Morning talking about cycling in and out of the GTA.
Historical Studies
  • Professors Ajay Rao and Karen Ruffle have been awarded a 2014-2016 John E. Sawyer Seminar on the Comparative Study of Cultures grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Their project, "Religious Materiality in the Indian Ocean World, 1300-1800" will support one postdoctoral and two graduate student fellowships, and will convene for biweekly meetings during the 2015-2016 academic year.
Institute for Management and Innovation Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology
  • Professors Brett Caraway and Nicole Cohen are hosting the "Union for Democratic Communications" conference in May 2015 at the UofT. Please see the Call for Papers for
    Circuits of Struggle. The deadline to submit is December 1, 2014.
 Political Science Psychology
  • The Department welcomes two new faculty members: Norm Farb is an Assistant Professor who studies the neuroscience of human identity and emotion, and Iva Zovkic is an Assistant Professor who specializes in behavioural neuroscience.
  • Professor Emily Impett received the Gerald R. Miller Award for Early Career Achievement from the International Association for Relationship Research and in April she was also awarded an Early Researcher Award (Round 9) from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation.
  • Professor Emily Impett and collaborator Post-doctoral Fellow Amy Muise's research from Impett's Relationships and Well-Being Lab was featured in the seven-page article "Just Do It" in the September 2014 issue of The Walrus; the most popular article at the magazine since its release.
  • Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller is the recipient of the International Award in Hearing awarded by the American Academy of Audiology. She also organized a CIHR planning workshop as part of the Canadian Longitudinal Studies in Aging project.
  • Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller and collaborator Postdoctoral Fellow Kate Dupuis have two manuscripts, one in Aging, Neuropsychology, and Cognition and the other in Ear and Hearing, that were recently accepted and are now in press with both journals.
  • Graduate student Melissa Paquette-Smith is the first recipient of the June and David Scott Award, which was established in 2014. The Fellowship supports MA/PhD research and provides support for students who are conducting research that directly contributes to the work of the Fraser Mustard Institute for Human Development at the University of Toronto.  Melissa is working with Professor Elizabeth Johnson.
  • Undergraduate student Ramandeep Sehra received the award for Outstanding Poster Presentation in Neurosciences & Mental Health at the Hospital for Sick Children's Summer Research Program Symposium Day for "Neurodevelopmental outcomes of pre- and peri-natal exposure to antiretroviral treatment in HIV-uninfected children." Ramandeep is supervised by Professor Mary Lou Smith.
Sociology Visual Studies
  • Professor John Ricco's book The Decision Between Us: Art and Ethics in the Time of Scenes was published in March 2014 by the University of Chicago Press.
    Professor Ricco also co-chaired a panel at the "Queer Places, Practices and Lives" conference at Ohio State University in May. Additionally he will be presenting a paper in November at the "World Picture" conference at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry in Berlin, and will be a Guest Lecturer at Cambridge University, Corpus Christi College.
