Let RCR Find Your Next Boat, or Sell Your Existing One!
What’s New? By Tim Finkle: It’s starting to ramp up again here at RCR Yachts. The yards in Buffalo and Youngstown are buzzing with boats coming out of the water and prepping for winter storage. We are getting plenty of nice new listings and customers looking to make a change. Now is also a good time to place orders on new boats to ensure delivery for spring. We still have boats to show at each of our locations and plenty more can be seen at the Annapolis Boat Show starting in 2 weeks, which RCR will be attending once again. The racers are making plans for their winter sailing schedule which will be a welcome break from the cold up here. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions about any of the above, we are always willing to help. Finally, Corbo just returned from a recent trip to Maine where he was able to stop in on the Back Cove facilities. Please read more about it in the “Stories” section below.
Beneteau Oceanis 38 Performance Sparkles: Our man in Erie, Tracy Buczak, raved about how well the new Oceanis 38 sailed during a delivery to the new owners earlier this summer. Trace knows what he is doing but we weren't sure how much of his enthusiasm had to do with the excitement of delivering a new boat....something we never tire of. Yesterday we were speaking to a dealer friend of ours who happens to be a very accomplished sailor. He had just come back from sailing the new Oceanis 38 and wanted us to know how amazed he was with the performance. The boat was much faster than he had expected and also more stable. The combination of the hard chine and twin rudders meant the boat did not pick up any weather helm when it heeled in a big puff, it just kept going faster. He said it was a definite step up in performance over previous models and he felt Beneteau had discovered something special in the hull design. And this was with the shoal keel and in-mast furling mainsail too. Combine that with a terrific cockpit and comfortable interior available in various configurations and you can see why the new 38 is Beneteau's hottest seller right now.

Canalside Maritime Festival: Last weekend, Rick, Darren and Jim worked the second annual Maritime Festival right down at the docks of Canalside. We had a Trophy 19 on a trailer next to our tent, which looked great until a big gust of wind knocked it over! We also had a customer’s 2014 Beneteau Oceanis 48 on the dock which was by far the belle of the ball. There is a lot of action going on at Canalside with more construction going on every day. It’s very encouraging for our waterfront, Buffalo residents, and boat owners in the area.

Stories, News & Articles:
My Trip to Maine, by Corbo Corbishley, RCR Rochester: I recently had a Purchase Offer accepted from a Rochester based client on an absolutely drop dead gorgeous, over the top beautiful, Morris 36 in Northeast Harbor, Maine.
We find it is becoming more customary for the selling broker to attend the survey after a purchase price has been agreed upon. There are many reasons for this; first and foremost is to support the buyer through the survey process, but the level of investment, familiarity with the selected surveyor along with past experience with the selling broker/brokerage are just some of the considerations that come into play when deciding to attend the survey. And hey, it's a nice time of year to be visiting the Maine coast. And if you’re into "Lobsta" as the locals say...
I took advantage of the opportunity to head up to Maine a day early and schedule a visit to the Back Cove factory in Rockland, Maine (If you are a regular reader of our newsletters you know my wife Donna and I are new Back Cove 30 owners). A few years back Back Cove Yachts and North End Composites, the company that builds several component parts and tooling for Sabre Yachts, found themselves in need of more production capacity. I don't know if it was karma or just a little good luck that about that same time Nautica vacated a larger 240,000 sq. ft. facility directly across the street from their old building. The owners of Back Cove jumped on the opportunity to purchase the building and the move was on.
Back Cove 37
I remember hearing when Back Cove first moved into the new building they were going to subdivide and rent out half the building because they certainly didn't need all that space... Well apparently those plans were quickly scuttled as the demand for both Back Cove and Sabre yachts has skyrocket the past few years. Today roughly half the building is used for the offices, various shops and three production lines where they build close to a 100 new Back Cove yachts each year. The other half of the building is used to build various component parts for the Sabre Yachts as well as the first new Sabre 66! A new model set to launch next year. Both Back Cove and Sabre production is sold out for a year with some models, like the new Back Cove 41, which is sold out into 2016!
New Sabre 66 Hull in process
I been through many boat building factories over the years... Starting back in the 70's when I use to visit the TPI factory in Warren, RI, the first Freedom and Alden facility in Portsmouth and C&C plant at Niagara-On-the-Lake. It's always educational to see the inside of a boat in various stages of production. What made this visit especially interesting was seeing the boat I own in production... BUT, as things go, there were no Back Cove 30's currently in production. As I mentioned earlier they only have room for three production lines on the Back Cove end of the building; one line is dedicated to the Back Cove 41, the middle line is for the Back Cove 37, where they juggle between the standard 37 and the newer "Down East" 37 and other line is shared between Back Cove 34 and Back Cove 30. Just my luck this line was loaded with Back Cove 34's from the moulding end to the shipping ramp.
Back Cove Deck Infusion
It was far from a wasted visit! It was good to meet Guy Seiders, the top man when it comes to customer service at Back Cove, who I have talked to many times and now have a face to match the voice. He answered all my questions and helped understand a few things about our new boat I didn't know. I also got to meet, and had the opportunity to spend a few minutes with Jason Constantine, the President of Back Cove Yachts, who shared a few entertaining stories from the "old days" when production was across the street. I was able to see several boats in various stages of production. I find it particularly interesting to see boats after all the mechanicals are in place just before the deck goes on. And I got to crawl through a new Back Cove 41 that had just been decked but was still in the middle of production. It' a BIG boat.
Later that afternoon on my way up the coast I was rehashing what I saw... It struck me that Back Cove (and Sabre as well) takes a pretty unique approach to boat building. They employ the latest innovative designs, quality gel coats, resins, coring materials, hardware etc., and infusion technology in both hull and deck layup along with other industry leading boat buildings technologies. But right alongside all this modern boat building there a lot of "Old School" skill
utilized in building these boats. I watch a tradesman use these three wooden blocks in a fashion I still don't understand to measure, fit, mark and cut a door molding that fit perfectly when he put in place. I watched another carpenter carefully fit a piece of cabinetry into the corner of a Back Cove 37. He was using a collection of hand tools that l remember from my grandfather's wood shop.
It's is really hard to appreciate the range of skills and craftsmanship that are utilized in building these beautiful boats until you see it firsthand. Modern state of-the-art boat building technology right alongside "Old School" craftsmanship used for centuries in boat building. A unique mix that Back Cove has mastered. Check out a Back Cove and see for yourself!
New Boats News:
Beneteau 38 on Display in Buffalo, Erie and Rochester: We took delivery of our first Beneteau Oceanis 38 in the Cruiser version and it is on display at RCR’s Rochester office. We also have Oceanis 38s in the Weekender version that may be seen in Buffalo and Erie. Those who have sailed and powered the boat rave about how well it performs and that it is deceptively quick. The twin rudders provide extra control because when heeled the leeward rudder is in better water than a single rudder would be. Let us show you what we mean.
Here is a video of the boat in the 3 options, Weekender, Cruiser, Day Sailor

The New Beneteau Oceanis 35: When in France over the summer, Don was able to board the new Beneteau Oceanis 35, two of them in different configurations actually. This boat is going to be a winner, very similar to the Oceanis 38 which has been the most popular Beneteau model in 2014. Now we will be able to offer the best new cruising sailboats in the popular 35 and 38 foot size ranges, and each comes in several different versions.
