Move well.    Breathe well.    Be well.

October is such a lovely time of year.

The colourful leaves. The crisp autumn air. The most laid back holiday of the year – Canadian Thanksgiving. I have just started to feel like I am settling into this season, and I am falling in love with it all over again.

Things got off to a bit of a rocky start for me this fall because I was in my first car accident in early September. My yoga practice has been a strong foundation of support for me as I work to recover from the accident.

There really aren't words to capture how grateful I am for the practice of yoga and how blessed I feel to be able to share it with others.

With gratitude,
Sarah

Taking Care

I have been reading a book called The Body Doesn't Lie by Vicky Vlachonis, an osteopathic physician, and it has been inspiring me to develop my self-care habits.

Most of us would benefit from caring more for ourselves, so I am challenging you to start one new self-care habit in the morning and one in the evening for 80 days. It doesn't have to be anything huge, but starting on Canadian Thanksgiving through to the end of 2014, I challenge you to commit to starting and ending your day by intentionally caring for yourself in small but significant ways. Here are a few ideas...

Ideas for Morning Self-Care Habits
  • Warm water with lemon
  • Dry brushing
  • Morning meditation
  • Self-massage
  • Dance to one of your favourite songs
Ideas for Evening Self-Care Habits
  • Gratitude journal
  • Gentle stretching
  • Epsom salt bath
  • Evening meditation
  • Breathing exercises
  • Drink a comforting cup of herbal tea

Recommended Read
Grain Brain by David Perlmutter has been recommended to me many times, and I finally got around to reading it last month. Perlmutter is a neurologist and his beliefs about how we should be eating are very similar to the ones Josh Turnkett presents in The Migraine Miracle. They both essentially argue that we should be eating low carbohydrate diets with little to no gluten or sugar – and they are very convincing!
Sleep Matters

A 2009 study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that people who average less than seven hours of sleep per night have triple the risk of catching a cold compared to people who average eight hours or more sleep per night.
A Simple Salad

This Lentil Salad with Mustard and Tomatoes has been a favourite in my household over the last couple of months. I recommend trying it while you can still buy fresh local cherry tomatoes in the grocery store.
Practicing Yoga Reduces Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is a huge health concern. It is linked to pain, obesity, ADD/ADHD, peripheral neuropathy, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, migraines, thyroid issues, dental issues, and cancer

A recent study on 200 breast cancer survivors found that multiple markers for inflammation were lowered by 10 to 15 percent after practicing yoga for just three months.

Knowing What to Eat,
Refusing to Swallow It

I probably read more about healthy eating than is healthy.  When it comes to food, there are a lot of conflicting ideas and competing interests, so it is sometimes hard to know what to believe and who to trust.

Every so often though, I come across something that simplifies the messiness. This article, Knowing What to Eat, Refusing to Swallow It, is one of those pieces for me. It is a grounding read that makes healthy eating seem a whole lot simpler.
