The Times They are  A Changing....

Bob Dylan was probably there in spirit at the opening of the Argentine Triple Crown. The Tortugas Open matches after some experimental rule changes beforehand was one where the authority of the referees stamped itself on the game from the outset. The referees, and the Argentine Polo Association had decided and had informed the players that they would let the game flow blowing only the dangerous faults. The result, as many wished was fast, end to end, cracking polo. As one of the players pointed out, “not only did the referees let us play but when dangerous fouls did occur they were blown”, and the end-result, leaving aside for an instant the winners on the field, was everyone….players, public and officials. La Nacion polo correspondent, certainly the world’s greatest polo correspondent stated the game was fast, intense and rapid in both senses of the word, the speed of the action and the time spent on the field, 1h45min for each of the opening matches. If he wrote it he certainly meant it.
Let the children play… as Santana would have sung it, and…did they play. PoloForEurope can only hope that this excellent start is followed not only in Argentina but worldwide. The Hurlingham Polo Association are said to be following the games closely. The spirit of the game may still win over an overly legalistic interpretation of the rules. It has certainly demonstrated it can.

Fürstenberg Trophy 2014/ 6 hcp

For the second time this season the home team takes the win in the Fürstenberg Polo Club. Tuki Ruiz Guiñazú was clearly the leader of this team and of the tournament, playing superbly and also scoring almost all penalty throughout the weekend (he missed only one in the three days). In the semifinal game on Saturday, the team from Fürstember had already shown their superiority. The Final played on Sunday with pretty wet field due to the rain fall the night before, was a great and even game, despite the conditions, with a good performance of Patricio Gaynor for Land Rover. Finally for only half goal but deservedly Haus Fürstenberg ends the season as they started, winning at home.
The rest of the matches scheduled for Sunday were defined by penalties shots.

Comments & Opinion

Players of Polo, Pato and domadores

At about the turn of the century, a non-playing member of the club, seeing that one of the home sides was a little weak offered to sponsor a 5 or 6 goaler to strengthen the team for the annual tournament. Now one of the member’s distant cousins happened to be argentine, and a well-known domador (horse breaker).  He was also a player and so was invited to Europe for the occasion. As soon as his name appeared upon the team list posted at the club house the vast majority of professionals complained to the committee stating that the rules at the time required 2 professional players and two patrons. As they rightly pointed out there was no mention of “domadores”. When asked as to why a domador could not be counted as a professional the answer was either illusive or simply that the response was self-evident  â€œdomadores” were not professionals. Finally the professionals’ point of view prevailed, and another professional came to play, accompanied by the “domador” in question who simply came as a spectator. Both were invited, wined, and dined by the very generous non-playing member during the two weeks of the tournament. Somewhat later in time, another player started his carrier, he was not a “domador” but a player of “pato” (a form of horseball), the argentine national sport. Some say that at that early period he too faced the same sort of difficulties. Apparently this did not trouble him for long as his name is familiar to most in the polo world, Bartolomé Castanola.
An indication of both “domadores’” work and pato can be seen on this archive.

It is well worth watching right to the end and the finals at Palermo.
