THIS WEEK AT KING'S

September 29 - October 5

Holy kamole. This week has figuratively been 450 years long. Seriously it’s been a freaking trek. CAN ANYONE ELSE ONT BELIEVE THAT IT’S OCTOBER IN TWO WEEKS. That mean Haloween is coming up.

But guacamole happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shout outz to Abby and Caora for sharing some quality avo dip with me in the quad this week. (I think) I even did a decent job of the guac. We didn't get a photo and I'm forever sorry. Next time. Shoutout also to the weather gods for humouring us. Probably one of the most relaxing moments of my week. Keep close-reading TWAK everyone, next time it could be you.

Thanks so much for coming out to the General Meeting and voting in the by-election! Great to see all those familiar faces and whole lot of new ones. Guess what! IT’S NOT OVER. Nomz are open again but you’ll read about that farther down the list.

Finally a heartfelt good luck to all the FYP people out there handing in their first for-real papers in a few hours. It gets easier. To give up and go to bed and finish it in the morning that is. Ayo.

"Finished up the KTS auditions this weekend and cast some amazing actors for 5 amazing plays! *shameless plug* over it." - Emma

SUNDAY - I don't know Sunday, and I will never Sunday. Please stop bringing this up to me.

ANNOUNCEMEMENTS

FALL COUNCILLOR ELECTIONS (YES, AGAIN)
Oh yeah. You thought it was over. IT’S NEVER OVER. Nominations are now open for First Year Rep, Arts Rep, Science Rep, Journalism Rep, and Member-at-Large. Yes, that’s most of Council. These are all an amazing opportunity to get involved with the Union and represent your fellow students on Council and to the University administration (which is crucial – more on that below). Here be the deets:

Nominations close: Friday October 3 at 11:59pm
Nomination forms must be submitted to CRO Emma Morris before this deadline. Can't find her? Drop them off at the KSU office during business hours.

Candidate speeches and Q&A in the Wardroom: Tuesday October 7, 7:00pm
All are welcome! Candidates for each position will briefly present their platforms, and then there will be time to ask them questions. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the elections process without having to really do anything at all except be informed!

Campaigning ends: Tuesday October 7 at 11:59pm

VOTING: Wednesday October 8 and Thursday October 9, 9:00am to 5:00pm
This is the most important part! Make sure that you make it to campus (with your student ID) to vote. As King's students and members of the Union, you all have the right to vote in Union elections. And now that you’ve done it before, you should all be PROS.

Hungry for more info? Check out our just-for-this-purpose webpage, email our Chief Returning Officer at cro@ksu.ca, or stop by the office and chat with one of us!

LOTS OF COOL NSPIRG THINGS
This one’s a biggie so I’m gonna ‘cite’ their email straight up: NSPIRG is YOUR social justice resource centre and here are some ways we're working with and for YOU! If you have any questions or want to get involved contact us at info@nspirg.ca or drop by our office on the third floor of the Dalhousie Student Union Building.

Fall Funding Round
Are you or someone you know involved in a project surrounding social or environmental justice, campus or community based education and research, or just about anything else that needs some money? NSPIRG's Fall Funding Round is for you! Three times a year we give grants to folks doing work around anti-oppression and the next deadline is October 8th. See the link below for more information and a copy of the application.

Open Board spots
Want to be part of the visioning and guidance of your campus social justice resource centre? We have an open spot for a King's student and are excited to hear why you'd like to be part of this team. Board members sit on hiring committees, help decide who we give funding to, help promote our society and events and eat snacks at bi-weekly board meetings. Click on for more information and an application.

ENRICH event
The Environmental Noxiousness, Racial Inequities and Community Health Project (ENRICH) and NSPIRG are hosting an evening to discuss environmental racism in Nova Scotia. Environmental racism is the disproportionate location of toxic industries and other environmental hazards close to racially marginalized communities. This is a systemic form of oppression and discrimination happening in our own backyard. On October 7th in the McInnes Room of the Dalhousie SUB the event will begin at 5:30pm with a traditional opening to honour the unceeded Mi’kmaw territory we will be hosted on. After a film screening of “In Whose Backyard?” keynote speakers James Desmond and Suzanne Patles will give an overview of their experiences organizing against environmental racism. Breakout groups hosted by local experts in law, policy, health, education, media, and community organizing will discuss next steps and strategies for supporting community members in their efforts to have toxic industries and other environmental hazards in racially marginalized communities removed, cleaned up or re-located. The event will also include performances by El Jones and the Ujoma Cultural Diversity Drummers. Here’s tha Facebook event: http://nspirg.ca/open-positions-nspirg-board/

SOCIETIES WEBPAGE
HEY LOOK I MADE SOMETHING FOR YOU ALL. This is a page on our website that lists all of the societies currently ratified with the Union! It explains who they are and what they do, and their contact information is there too. You can also get the Society Ratification Package on the site, as the Funding Request Form too. Yay societies!

CLASSICS IN THE QUAD PRESENTS KALIDASA’S SAKUNTALA
Oh yes, it’s here. The moment you’ve all been waiting for. Kalidasa’s Sakuntala and the Ring of Recollection tells the romantic mythology behind the birth of India. When a warrior King encounters a nymph-like ascetic, he is entranced by her natural beauty. The two are wed, but become entangled in the wills and wiles of the more powerful Gods. When their union is cursed, the powers of fate must unite the two lovers again. Our tale of desire and duty, passion and pride, is sure to ignite the Quad (but bring your blankets; we will be under the stars by the end). Also bring snacks. And feel free to share with me.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 30

KING’S CO-OP BOOKSTORE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Bookstore, 7PM

Hello King's Co-op Bookstore members! If you've purchased a book from your friendly basement bookstore, you are a member of our Co-op and that means that you have a say in many aspects of the Bookstore, like the colour of post-it notes that we use to leave ourselves reminders in the store! You are cordially invited to our Annual General Meeting. Pros: Food, and a say in the future of the King's Bookstore. Negatives: None. It’s hard to argue with that.

KING’S FOREIGN FILM SOCIETY PRESENTS ‘LA HAINE’
Senior Common Room, 8PM

‘Hate’ translated into French is ‘La Haine’. This 1995 French film employs the lens of stylized social realism to portray the mean streets of Paris. Director Mathieu Kassovitz takes an unblinking look at a racially diverse group of young people trapped in the Parisian economic and social underclass. “La Haine does not provide an easy answer. So you have to struggle intellectually for yourself.” These screenings are always a BLAST and as usual there will be fancy cheese and bread. Feel free to bring a blanket to get cozy and/or refreshments for yourself and/or something fun to say when you see me there.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 1 YA DAMN RIGHT IT’S OCTOBER

HALIBURTON AND OUTDOOR SOCIETY GO TO #POINTPLEASANTPARK

They’re meeting on the library steps to walk over. Snacks and beverages will be provided!

COUNCIL UPDATES

Yeah we had Council today! Lots more cool things happened - we elected some committees, ratified a bunch more societies, and then Jim and George (the University's President and Bursar) came in to talk to us about the College's financial crisis.

They had a lot to say - for a closer look at the meeting, take a look at the live blog.
