Don't Miss Out on 2015!

The Fernwood Cove re-enrollment deadline has passed.  If you have not re-enrolled your daughter for Summer 2015 and plan to do so, please contact us as soon as possible.  We are already enrolling new families for the coming summer and we can't guarantee spots for returning campers since the re-enrollment deadline has passed.

Remember that we need both the completed enrollment form and the enrollment deposit for your daughter to be fully enrolled for the coming summer.  If you need an additional copy of your daughter's enrollment form, contact Chris at chris@fernwoodcove.com.

If you need to make any payments, you can do so by credit card through your online account.  We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express.  As always, you can submit payments by mail by sending checks to the camp office.

Beautiful fall leaves provide a colorful backdrop to the bunk line.
The view from in front of Egret bunk, looking over towards the waterfront.  The water is probably quite chilly!
The Nightingale and Feeder really stand out from the background of red and gold leaves.  Fall in Maine is so beautiful!
It's perfect weather for a campfire in the new fire pit by the Chick.  It's always a great time for s'mores!
The Fernwood Cove
Nature Treehouse
We are excited to announce that the construction of our latest Fernwood Cove addition, The Nature Treehouse, has begun!  The Nature Treehouse will house the Fernwood Cove Nature, Outdoor Living Skills and Outdoor Cooking programs.  The two-story structure will be located in a small forest behind our youngest camper bunks and will provide a bird's eye view into the surrounding trees.  The Nature Treehouse is a long-awaited addition to the Fernwood Cove facilities and will be the first official home to our nature-based activities since the old "Nature Room" was removed when the old Chick was demolished.  Along with the development of these new facilities, we will also be devoting considerable time and attention to further development of our Nature, OLS and Outdoor Cooking activities.  Alicia is very excited to return to her roots in Outdoor and Environmental Education as she looks to strengthen all three of these programs.  Campers can even look for her to instruct Nature activities in the coming summers!  We will continue to provide photos and updates as the construction of the Nature Treehouse continues and we look forward to the many outdoor adventures that will happen in and around this beautiful treehouse.

A Review of Summer 2014

Focusing on Friendships in The Extraordinary World

It seems like not that long ago that it was May and we were all busily planning for the coming summer.  It's so hard to believe that it's already been a month since we said our final "goodbyes" to the 2014 staff and ended another Fernwood Cove summer.  This summer our main focus was on fostering friendships.  It was something we spoke about throughout camp, we created new "social" spaces to encourage the girls to hang out more often, we integrated more time in the evening schedule to allow the girls to visit friends, sisters and Cove Pals on a regular basis...the list goes on and on.  It was amazing to see these connections forming throughout the camp session, the Fernwood Cove community was stronger than it had ever felt before.  There were friendships formed throughout age groups, connections with Cove Pals flourished by the end of the camp session and "hellos" and high-fives were shared between campers, CITs and counselors alike.  Summer 2014 was an amazing experience for everyone and as we look back we'd like to highlight some of our top moments!

  • The first installment of the new Ropes Course welcomed girls of all ages.  This summer over one hundred campers and CITs participated in activities on the course that helped them to develop stronger leadership, teamwork and communication skills.
  • The Fernwood Cove Counselor In Training (CIT) Program was the largest it's been since it's creation in 2007.  Nineteen CITs spent the full summer at camp developing a vast amount of knowledge and a multitude of skills in leadership, communication, activity development and instruction, and outdoor living skills.  The CITs were able to directly impact the Fernwood Cove Community as they utilized their new found skills throughout the summer as they assisted in camper bunks, led evening programs, assisted in Focus Activities and participated in Trip Days and Overnights.
  • Beigette initiated a new tradition for our 7th grade campers this summer, helping them to develop as young leaders in the camp community.  This new tradition also helped to unite the campers throughout the age group in preparation of them living in a single bunk for both their Junior and Senior summers.  The 2014 Fernwood Cove 7th grade campers ended their camp experience soaring like eagles!
  • We participated in a record number competitive inter-camp events that included tennis tournaments, soccer matches, archery tournaments, a water skiing & wakeboard competition and a dance competition.  The Fernwood Cove girls who chose to participate in these events showed great sportsmanship on and off the field and we couldn't be more proud of their accomplishments throughout the summer!
  • The Fernwood Cove Camper Library was officially opened this summer, providing an cozy reading environment and an amazing assortment of books.  The library not only provided a great reading spot, it was also a quite place to sit and chat and even hosted a few special bunk activities throughout the summer.
It was an amazing summer indeed.  Thank you again for sharing your daughter with us for Summer 2014.  We hope that her memories of this summer stay with her for many years to come.
Parent Survey Results Are In!
Thank you to everyone who submitted a response to our 2014 Parent Survey.  Your feedback provides us with valuable information to help improve the Fernwood Cove experience for our campers, CITs and you- our parents!

While we are interested in feedback regarding all aspects of camp, this year we sought specific feedback regarding Visiting Day as we look to make improvements to Visiting Day in the future.  We received the following feedback regarding specific changes to Visiting Day (schedule option followed by number of responses in favor of the option).

Remain the Same:  63
Saturday Visiting Day with departure after lunch: 23
Saturday pick-up with no Visiting Day, departure before lunch: 6
Sunday Visiting Day with departure after lunch: 25
Sunday pick-up with no Visiting Day, departure before lunch: 11

There is an obvious majority for the schedule to remain the same however when combined, the desire for a change is greater.  We recognize that there is a need to update the current Visiting Day schedule and potentially the entire structure of Visiting Day.  However we also received additional feedback regarding Visiting Day that included concerns regarding Sunday afternoon traffic leaving Maine, a desire to connect with the bunk counselors and other campers in the bunk, a desire for parents of new campers to be able to experience Visiting Day and see Fernwood Cove, and a feeling that closure that the current final night provides would be lost if departures occurred immediately following the Visiting Day activities.  We also know that many parents have booked accommodations for next summer based on the 2015 camp dates we provided at the end of each session this summer.

As we move forward in planning for Visiting Day we are looking to provide the best overall experience, while also meeting the needs of our families.  This can be quite the endeavor, so we've decided to have a "transitional year" for Visiting Day to allow for adequate planning time for us at camp as well as you as parents.  In this transition:
  • 2015 visiting weekend will continue with the current structure- Visiting Day occurring on Saturday and camper departures occurring on Sunday, consistent with current enrollment information that has been provided.
  • We will be developing a new schedule for Visiting Day that provides considerable more time for families to connect with bunk counselors and other families within their daughter's bunk.
  • Lunch will continue to be provided
  • There will be an option for parents to remain in camp after lunch to observe their daughter participate in a few of her favorite activities from the summer.  Afternoon activities will be organized for campers whose parents depart from camp following lunch.
  • For those families who chose to remain in camp, the day will conclude at approximately 3:00.
We recognize the commitment parents make in coordinating plans for Visiting Day and their daughter's departure from camp and we appreciate your dedication to your daughter and her camp experience.  We will continue to discuss Visiting Day options for future summers and ensure you that we will provide you with updates as changes are made.  We appreciate your patience during this transition as we work to improve this aspect of camp for everyone.  If you have any feedback specific to Visiting Day please contact Alicia and let her know.
