Greetings:

Although summer in academia is often a quiet time for many colleges, we at Guttman were busy preparing for the College’s inaugural commencement. 80 students (or 28%) from the College’s 2012 inaugural class graduated on August 27 2014, in comparison with the two-year national graduation rate at large city community colleges (6.3%). The College is on track to meet or exceed its initial three-year graduation goal of 35%, contrasted with the three-year national large city community colleges graduation rate of 14.6%. We are tremendously proud of our first graduates’ accomplishments; 73 are continuing their studies at four-year colleges—64 at CUNY senior colleges. Watch the commencement video celebrating our inaugural class.

We were delighted to welcome CUNY’s new Chancellor, James B. Milliken, who visited us in August to meet with our staff, students and faculty. We also welcomed our third incoming class of 418 new students, who started the Summer Bridge Program on August 18. The College is now growing, with five Houses of first-year students and 11 new full-time faculty members. We have a total of 37 full-time faculty and 22 part-time. Our full-time faculty teach more than 70% of our fall classes.

We kicked off the fall semester with a Convocation ceremony at the New York Public Library on September 2, where first-year students marked the last day of Summer Bridge and their official start as Guttman students with a pinning ceremony. Assistant Professor Karla Smith-Fuller gave an inspiring speech and continuing student Victoria Franco presented a moving spoken word performance. At the conclusion of Convocation, first-year students presented their final Summer Bridge projects at the 2014 Gallery Walk. In the afternoon we celebrated our continuing students’ academic and leadership success at the Award Ceremony.

We look forward to an exciting year as we graduate additional students from our inaugural 2012 cohort and expand opportunities for students to engage in internships, community service, and experiential learning.

Sincerely,

Scott
