The last few weeks have seen some very important developments for anyone concerned with climate change issues and building sustainable communities. 400,000 people came together in New York headed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to sound the alarm to the global Cimate Change summit. Spearheaded by Bill McKibben from 350.org there was support across the world including 40,000 people marching in London.
This vast and concrete expression of public opinion should help us realise that our local commitment through Transition St Albans to build a more environmentally sustainable community is part of a world-wide clamour to do things differently.

A new Zero Waste group has set up to work on a range of issues, covering plastic, detergent, creating art from rubbish, council targets on recycling and local visits to recycling or landfill sites.
The group needs your help, suggestions or tips.
- Do you recycle items not collected by the Council’s recycling? For example one of our members recycles plastic milk bottle tops for charity and another takes working electrical items to a local charity shop)?
- Do you buy an item particularly for its reduced packaging? If so, what is it? For example a brand of tea as it doesn't contain a foil sleeve to keep it ‘fresh'.
Please click here to email us with your ideas and local experience. These will be collated and uploaded on the website so that we can all help reduce landfill!

On a sunny day in September FoodSmiles St Albans invited its supporters to see the results of their growing on their patch of organic land at Hammonds End Farm. It is amazing to see the difference since they first came across the patch of empty land in April this year.
Please click here to see the FoodSmiles St Albans website.
The mayor of Harpenden turned up, children played games, grown-ups ate delicous b-b-q food, and soaked up the atmosphere. Nearly 25 people are now signed up and digging the land and taking home regular veg boxes.

A Transition St Albans Member is looking for a ‘co-worker’ to help with his allotment which is full size and which he and his family have worked organically for about 20 years. Ideally the co-worker would share the work (organically) and the produce. No heavy clearing necessary. If you’re interested please click here to email info@transitionstalbans.org - we will put you in touch.

Learning to grow our own cuts down on carbon emissions created with food miles, re-engages us with basic, enjoyable physical activities that connect us to the natural world and saves us paying out for stuff we can create ourselves.
