Your monthly update on Living Labs, events, calls for funding, papers or experts, EU Projects & of course ENoLL member activities.

Back into full swing after a beautiful summer, September has very a very busy month with numerous great events and new project launches!

We hope that everyone enjoyed OpenLivingLab Days. It's always a pleasure getting to meet and reconnect with members and friends of the ENoLL network. You can read below a small synopsis of the event and find links to presentations, photos and resources used throughout the conference in addition to the published conference proceedings.

Looking towards the later part of 2014 we have a pack calendar of events to look forward to so don't forget to book your agenda's already! There are also some great opportunities available to entrepreneurs through the FIWARE Accelerator Programme and Living Labs looking for a unique test environment to undertake research in the wild!. NEWS & STORIES
Festival As Lab: call for proposals!
Launching officially today is a unique opportunity to undertake research, design and experimentation in the wild, in a living, urban environment as a part of the 20th anniversary edition of FutureEverything festival, 26-28 February 2015 in Manchester, UK. Festival as Lab (FAL15) aims to take research out of the laboratory to test ideas and prototypes live with festival attendees and/or Manchester residents. Living Lab trials during a festival enables the free circulation of people and ideas, connects people at different levels, from grassroots to government and business leaders, and provides a unique temporary platform to conduct participatory research, design and innovation processes. OpenLL14 Conference Proceedings
Within OpenLivingLab Days a call for papers was launched to address both conceptual and empirical challenges and stimulate discussion on a number of Living Lab related topics. 40 papers were submitted by researchers and an international review panel led by Prof. Pieter Ballon (VUB of Brussels) assessed the articles and finally accepted 18 papers. These were presented during the Research Day and included into conference proceedings (online version is now available). The paper presented by Yvonne Franz and entitled “Chances and Challenges for Social Urban Living Labs in Urban Research” won the Veli-Pekka Niitamo Prize for best academic contribution. FIWARE Accelerator Programme
September 2014 marked the grand opening of the FIWARE Accelerator programme, where the European Commission has allocated 80 million Euros to foster innovation and businesses on the Internet of the Future. 16 different accelerator projects in different thematic areas from smart cities to media, learning to agrifood, were launched in September 2014 during ECFI-2 event in Munich, helping entrepreneurs capture opportunities coming from a new wave of digitization in multiple sectors.
 
80 million Euros will be distributed amongst SME's, start-ups and web entrepreneurs across Europe with innovative ideas for sustainable businesses that will lead to transformations in the daily life of people, organisations or businesses.  For more information visit www.fiware.org and for the open calls see here.
Welcome to the new 8th wave members of ENoLL!

On the 5th of September 2014, the European Network of Living Labs announced the results of the 8th Wave of membership and officially welcome the members approved during the 2014 call for membership. This welcoming ceremony took place during the proceedings of the ENoLL annual Living Lab conference, OpenLivingLab Days, hosted this year at the De Nieuwe Liefde in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The evaluation process, as carried out in every Wave for membership, resulted in 25 new accepted members to this global community of Living Labs and to the association of the European Network of Living Labs. The Wave process, dating back to 2006, has up to this day resulted in 340+ accredited ENoLL Living Labs.

Welcome to the 25 new labs: Adelaide Living Laboratory (Australia), InnovAGE (Belgium), CareVille (Belgium), RehabMaLL (Canada), Silver Living Lab (France), Streetlab (France), Réunica Domicile (France), Dublin LL (Ireland), TAGS (Italy), St.E.SE.Geo (Italy), KLIO Lab (Italy), TIE-LL (Italy), Green Schools (Italy), Crikhet Living Lab (Italy), Eindhoven Living Lab (Netherlands), CIC-West Brabant (Netherlands), Smart Jeddah Living Lab (Saudi Arabia), Health Care Innovation Lab Orbital40 (Spain), IBIP Living Lab (Spain), UAB Smart Campus (Spain), EVOMOBILE: Electromobility living-lab (Spain), Energy Living Lab (Switzerland), lab4living (UK), Manchester Digital Innovation LL Lab (UK) and last by not least Innovate Dementia (UK)

OpenLivingLab Days 2014

250 attendees from all corners of the globe came together at De Nieuwe Liefde in Amsterdam for OpenLivingLab Days 2014 as organised by ENoLL together with Waag Society, the City of Amsterdam and Amsterdam Economic Board.

The is the annual event of the world-wide Living Lab community and included 4 days of open exchange, networking, workshops, inspirational speeches and visits. The official conference proceedings can be found here and if you check the event website you will find each session is now updated with the presentations and resources shared during the sessions by the presenters and facilitators.

It was a pleasure reconnecting with you, or for the new faces, meeting you for the first time and we hope that over the next 12 months you continue to build on the connections you made during OpenLivingLab Days and also share your success with the ENoLL office.

OpenLL14 might have only just finished but we are already thinking to the future and are thrilled to announce that the 2015 edition will be organised in Istanbul Turkey in collaboration with Basaksehir Living Lab. We will be working hard over the coming months to bring together and interesting and inspiring agenda and we look forward to hosting you in Istanbul in September 2015! 2nd FIRE Forum, 15th October 2014, Brussels
Focus on IoT and 5G for collaboration and roadmapping towards 2020

 
The whole FIRE community and all communities interested in Future Internet Research and Experimentation and piloting are invited to this FIRE Forum, including industry, SMEs, public authorities and policy makers, etc. The main objective of the FIRE Forum is to share and exchange information between the FIRE constituencies and other initiatives and organisations regarding the involvement of other communities in experimental testing and piloting to see how FIRE can adapt and evolve and to foster collaboration. This would include ground-breaking research as well as technically mature piloting for close-to-market products, applications or services. Register before October 7th here.

The FIRE Forum will be followed by the 5th EU-Japan Symposium in the ICT Research and Innovation, which will be held in Brussels on 16-17 October. Read more here.
CreatiFI: leveraging the Future Internet for Creative Industries

CreatiFI is a new European initiative introducing the FIWARE technological platform to Creative Industries and supporting the development of new creative applications and Future Internet technologies with a total 4.8 million Euro fund.

During the first CreatiFI call, 60+ applications will receive funding ranging from €10k to €50k to develop a prototype, of which 18+ will be selected for additional funding of up to €100k for commercial development and acceleration. In total, up to €150k is available to an individual applicants! Application is open for start-ups, SMEs and web-entrepreneurs. Deadline: 30th of November 2014.

Connect Future Conference (CFC2014), 29th October 2014, Eindhoven

Members of ENoLL are warmly invited to participate in the Connected Future Conference 2014 (CFC 2014), organized by the Municipality of Eindhoven, the Province of North-Brabant and E-Society Platform. On Wednesday 29 October 2014 hundreds of conference visitors will gather in Eindhoven, elected as “the worlds‟ smartest region” in 2011, to get inspired and to mobilize the further progress of digitalization.

Advancing digitalization of our society is of great importance for a new economic growth perspective, a healthy and affordable welfare level and a sustainable society. At the same time we have to safeguard our security and privacy, by identifying and managing possible threats. To fully make use of the possibilities of digitalization and have the implementation run efficiently it is of great importance that government, science and business join forces and jointly create a new and sustainable future. CFC2014 shows how sectors can cooperate to create a new future!

JAMToday: Game Jam Bilbao

A game jam is a gathering of game developers who develop a game in a short span of time. In many ways you can compare a game jam to a hackathon; an event where people gather for a fixed time period and work together on a project. Developers team up in teams of 5-6 people and all participants work on a game related to the same assignment.

Bilbao Ekintza, GAIA and ENoLL will be hosting a Game Jam in Bilbao on Friday the 10th of October in the context of the project JAMToday on the theme of sport and physical activity. if you are interested in serious gaming, or how computer games can have a positive impact in domains like health then we look forward to hosting you at our JAM.

Public consultation on the 2020 strategy

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the Europe 2020 strategy, the EU's long-term growth and jobs plan. Europe 2020 is the European Union’s ten-year growth and jobs strategy that was launched in 2010. It is about more than just overcoming the crisis from which our economies are now gradually recovering. It is also about addressing the shortcomings of our growth model and creating the conditions for a smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. The consultation will be open until 31 October 2014.
