WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN EDITION OF NEWS & VIEWS!

Hello once again! It’s been quite a few months since our last newsletter which showcased our new branding for the first time, and since the new website went live we’ve been extremely busy.

With our annual HR Forum being another success, we’re now working on some new projects for 2015 which we’re looking forward to sharing with you soon. And as Autumn begins, the media industry shows no sign of slowing down with October seeing both London Film Festival and MIPCOM kicking things into gear.

Employment and Gender Equality

Emma Watson's HeForShe Campaign is gaining viral traction

Recent results released from a study conducted by Indeed.com have shown that jobs in the UK have increased across all sectors since last summer.

The figures  revealed that unemployment has fallen to a six-year low of 6.2%, down from 7.7% in 2013 with young people seeing the largest annual fall by 213,000.

Not only this but they’ve also recently revealed that the number of women in work has risen fastest in the UK compared to other countries. The numbers came via the Office for National Statistics and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation & Development and have seen us come out on top of other countries, with France and America falling behind.

With new stories such as Emma Watson’s inspiring speech on Equality at the UN  taking prominent position in the media (and for good reason) the topic of gender equality has been on top of late.

At the same UN event, the film industry was called out on not representing women as well as they should, with female action stars being few and far between. However, it was pointed out that above other countries productions, the UK was singled out as making more effort for female speaking parts.

While we shouldn’t take this as an all out triumph and should continue to spread the awareness of campaigns such as Emma Watson’s HeForShe , we can take a positive note knowing that while not all the work is done, when it comes to the film industry as well as employment overall, the UK isn’t doing so bad.

What Will You Be Watching?
London Film Festival 2014

Film fans! It’s that time of year again; London Film Festival starts on the 8th October, playing a multitude of films and genres across a range of venues for 12 days, and you have until the 19th October to catch as many screenings as possible.

Split into different categories, there’s a wealth of countries, directors and themes on offer so there’s no shortage of options. Here are the ones we’re looking forward to –

The Gala Screenings tend to showcase the most mainstream and popular releases, with everyone talking about Steve Carell’s performance in Foxcatcher
, acting alongside Channing Tatum and depicting the true story of the Olympic Gold winning Schultz brothers and their relationship with multi-millionaire John Du Pont.

The two Gala screenings that we have down on our list are Jason Reitman’s Men, Women and Children and Mr Turner starring Timothy Spall, who already won at Cannes for his performance.

Another entertaining category is the Cult section, and with our Marketing Coordinator being a horror enthusiast, the main film down on his must see list is the much talked about It Follows.

One film that’s also peeked our interested is in the Laugh category: Nightbus,  a film which follows various funny and strange things that occur on those much feared night bus journeys home.

Of course there is the Official Competition selection and we’re looking at A Girl Walks Home Alone, another interesting take of the vampire genre, and The Keeping Room.

Having only briefly skimmed the large programme for LFF here, we recommend you check out the full listings here. What are you hoping to see?

Searchlight & Luminas' Annual HR Forum

Thursday 12th September 2014 saw another successful HR Forum, as Searchlight & Lumina came together to put on our annual event for HR professionals within the media and entertainment industry.

With the theme of Fit For The Future – Building Personal and Organisational Resilience, we had guest speakers from ITV, BSkyB, Royal Opera House, Lewis Silkin, Funky Learning, NBCUniversal and ITN,  who all spoke about the processes their companies have implemented to succeed and stay on top  in such a competitive environment.

Taking place at the plush NBCUniversal offices, we had a great turn out from companies including, Disney, Channel 4, FOX, BFI, Viasat, UKTV and Paramount Pictures, so we wanted to say a big thank you to our attendees, our excellent guest speakers and NBCUniversal for being wonderful hosts and providing us all with a delicious lunch and of course, plenty of wine.

If you work in HR or have a HR colleague interested in next year’s event, please email James@searchlight.com who will add you to the invite list for 2015.
