Finding U.S. Decennial Census Data

There are many products available, both commercial and free, for finding current and historical decennial census data. Most of these products offer unique features and functionality that make them useful for particular types of research projects. In this workshop we'll explore how to use Social Explorer, GeoLytics Neighborhood Change Database, IPUMS USA, and NHGIS.

Introduction to R for Life Scientists

This workshop is directed toward life scientists with little to no experience with statistical computing or bioinformatics. This interactive workshop will introduce the R statistical computing environment, including basic instruction in data types, variables, array manipulation, functions, data frames, data import/export, visualization, and using packages. The UVa R UseR Group will have its next meeting on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Library Data Commons@Curry (Ruffner Hall, Room 302). Jody White will speak on using the knitr and markdown packages for easily creating reproducible research, and Clay Ford will give an introduction on using R for web scraping.

2014 ICPSR Data Fair
ICPSR will host its biennial Data Fair this week! From October 6-9, 2014, the ICPSR Data Fair will offer more than a dozen webinars on topics such as teaching with data, options for depositing data, and applying for and accessing restricted-use data. There are also orientations to some of the thematic collections, including the National Additional & HIV Data Archive Program (NAHDAP) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive (SAMHDA).
