August Strindberg

"the Dance of Death" is shown at A Noise Within

This past weekend Sofie and PetroNella got the opportunity to go see Strindberg's "the Dance of Death" at the theatre A Noise Within, in Pasadena. It was a real theatrical event and an emotional play filled with feelings, humor and a deep interesting darkness.

For twenty-five years, Edgar, a captain in the Swedish coast artillery, and his wife, Alice, have lived an unhappy existence. Their unhappiness is caused by Edgar’s contempt for everyone else in the world; he thinks of himself as a better being than others, even his wife, and makes their marriage a tyranny. They live on an island off the coast, where Edgar is the commanding officer of the artillery detachment. Living in an old fortress, part of which once served as a prison, they avoid the other people of the island—including officers of the post and their wives. Indeed, Alice is virtually a prisoner in her own home. The only means of communication she has with the mainland is through a telegraph key, which she teaches herself to operate. She keeps her skill with the telegraph a secret as her husband does not want her to have any means of communication with the outside world.

Alice’s only hope of release from her husband’s tyranny lies in the fact that he is ill and might die at any time. Just before their silver wedding anniversary, Kurt, Alice’s cousin arrives on the island to officiate as the quarantine officer. During this visit, he learns about their tormented relationship: Edgar suffers an attack and Alice gloats over her husband’s illness. Kurt, who was divorced by his wife, also learns that Edgar caused the divorce and persuaded the court to award the custody of the children to Kurt’s wife.

During Edgar’s two-day illness, grave changes take place in the three people. Alice turns gray-haired; feeling that the time has come when she should admit her age, she stops tinting her hair. Alice also becomes an object of distrust to Kurt, when she tries to make love to him while her husband is ill. Kurt, unable to understand her actions, cannot fully realize how much she hates her husband and how much she suffered during the past twenty-five years. Edgar himself resembles a corpse after his illness, but he immediately tries, upon his recovery, to dominate the others.

On the third day after his attack, Edgar tells his wife he is going to divorce her. In retaliation, she tries to have him convicted of the embezzlement of government funds, of which he is innocent. She also embraces her cousin Kurt in her husband’s presence, at which time Edgar tries to kill her with his saber.

When Kurt realizes how manipulative both Alice and Edgar are, he leaves the island. Alice and Edgar are left to contemplate the lies they have told each other and consider the possibility that they could actually live with each other. They admit that they will most likely continue to torture each other, but they have revelations about their partner’s merits—and, in a quiet accord, finally begin to plan their 25th wedding anniversary party.

Conor McPherson, have written the new version of this Strindberg classic and he has been called â€œthe finest playwright of his generation” by the New York Times.

The Nobel Prize

Recipients 2014

This year, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded jointly to Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai.

Kailash Satyarthi is a human rights activist from India who, in 1980, gave up his successful electrical engineering career to dedicate his life to the global movement to end child slavery and exploitative child labor. His tireless efforts have resulted in the rescue of over 78,500 child slaves and the development a thriving model for their education and rehabilitation. Kailash founded the Global March Against Child Labor, the largest civil society network (a worldwide coalition) for the most exploited children. He has played an important role in linking the fight against child labor with the efforts for achieving 'Education for All'.

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education, who at 17 years old, became the youngest ever to win a Nobel Prize in any category. Malala was in chemistry class when she heard the news and humbly decided to treat it like a normal day by not leaving school. At such a young age, she has shown by example that people of all ages can be the change they want to see in the world. Nearly two years ago, she was targeted and shot in the head by Taliban following all the publicity she received for defying the Taliban's campaign to close schools. As a result of this incident, she said, "Weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born." For several years, she has been fighting for the right of girls to education and has become a leading spokesperson for girls' rights to education.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology 2014 was divided three ways, one half awarded to John O'Keefe, and the other half split between May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser, "for their discoveries of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain." O'Keefe, a British-American neuroscientist and professor, is known for his discovery of place cells in the hippocampus. In addition to their work of identifying the cells that make up the positioning system in the brain, Edvard Moser,

and wife May-Britt Moser of Norway played key roles in the establishment of the Center for the Biology of Memory (CBM) in 2002 and the Institute for Systems Neuroscience in 2007. The couple were pioneers of research on the brain's apparatus for representing space.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2014 was awarded jointly to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura for the invention of blue LED, a major breakthrough in lighting technology that has created bright and energy-saving white light sources.

The 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Jean Patrick Modiano, a French novelist "for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation". The Nobel Prize came as unexpected to both himself, and to those most familiar with his work, probably due to the fact that despite Modiano's abundant output, less than a dozen of his books have been translated into English, several of which were even out of print before the announcement of the prize.

The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2014 was awarded to Jean Tirole, a French professor in economics, "for his analysis of market power and regulation". Tirole studies game theory, industrial organization, psychology, as well as banking and finance, and is a founding member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST).

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014 was divided equally three ways between Eric Betzig, Stefan W. Hell, and William E. Moerner "for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy," which has made it possible to obtain optical images at the nanometer scale. Our concepts of some of the most fundamental components of living cells are being revolutionized thanks to this super-resolution imaging technique.
