A Note From Denise...

Welcome to the fourth issue of The Hub-a-dub-dub! In this issue we celebrate a successful funding bid by Go Gamelan, which some schools may wish to take advantage of.  We also look back at one of the brilliant holiday courses run in Camden at Cecil Sharp House. Thank you to Aris Daryono and Cassie Tait for these contributions. We also feature a profile of Jasspa provided by Beverly Sizer. Don't forget to send Jenni anything, big or small, that you would like included in the next newsletter. Email Jenni at Jennifer.Cable@southwark.org.uk.

Get Your Folk On!, the English Folk Dance and Song Society's (EFDSS) creative holiday courses for young musicians aged 12 – 18, have been running for three years, funded by Youth Music.  Based at Cecil Sharp House, in Camden, these courses offer young people with varied levels of musical experience, the opportunity to explore folk and traditional music from the British Isles and beyond.  Players of all instruments are welcome, and no previous experience of folk is needed.

We look at developing techniques specific to folk music including improvisation, learning by ear, ornamentation and arrangement.  In our week-long summer course this year, young people had the chance to learn the banjo, melodeon or to try clog dancing.  They learned and arranged tunes in small groups, and as a big ceilidh band (think Bellowhead!). In addition they had many more options to develop their folk repertoire and knowledge, and to listen, share and perform their music with each other.

‘I would really love to come to this project again as I will take so much away from it. I have learnt so much about folk music.’ GYFO Summer participant

‘I really loved playing folk music with lots of people. It created such a powerful sound and was very enjoyable to contribute to.’ GYFO Summer participant

70 talented young Londoners were awarded four-year music scholarships to help them develop their skills as musicians, in the latest round of awards presented by the Mayor's Music Fund at a City Hall ceremony on Thursday 25 September.

Worth a total of £280,000, over four years, the Mayor's Music Scholarships will see the young people from London’s 32 boroughs being given an extensive programme of music tuition and support that they would not otherwise be able to afford. Established in 2011 by the Mayor to help talented children from disadvantaged families fulfil their musical potential, it brings the total number of primary school children to benefit from the scholarship scheme to 300.

The latest Mayor's Music Scholarships were presented by concert pianist and TV presenter James Rhodes, in a special ceremony sponsored by the Trinity College London. James Rhodes says: “I am so thrilled to have been invited to speak at the Mayor's Music Fund’s awards celebration.  The charity does vital, life-changing work that inspires and nurtures our next generation of musicians at a grass-roots level, which is just what we need.”

As well as the award ceremony itself new scholars were also treated to a workshop in the morning led by Pete Letanker An excellent time was had by all as the children sang, played and created music to be performed to parents, teachers and Boris Johnson himself later in the day.
The Mayor of London comments: 'Not every child can afford an instrument or the lessons they need to make real progress as musicians and the Music Fund is doing vital work to help hundreds of gifted youngsters towards realising their ambitions and achieve their full potential. In addition, as they develop as musicians these scholars are also gaining additional skills and experience that will be invaluable in all areas of their lives.'

Hub Member's Profile: JASSPA

James Allen's Saturday School for the Performing Arts have been teaching Dance, Drama and Music at JAGS on Saturdays for over 20 years. They have 40 specialist teachers and their pupils come from over 80 local schools. Their Dance and Drama classes are high energy, but not commercial in style; dance is contemporary and drama is workshop based covering a broad range of techniques and material for performance. All dance and drama classes perform once a year in their on-site, purpose built theatre. There is much more information at www.jasspa.org.uk but above all they are a creative, encouraging school where pupils can explore performing arts to the very best of their ability.

JASSPA have just secured funding for up to 10 talented students to join them this term!

They are really keen to reach talented students but also those who would not necessarily have been able to afford the tuition otherwise. In order to maximise upon the funding this year they are holding friendly auditions on 8th November with a view to pupils starting with us on 15th November, so time is of the essence! Places will be offered on potential, flair for performance and a willingness to learn; we won’t be asking parents to fill in bursary application forms and no previous experience is required.
