Game Day parking rules in effect Thursday

We encourage you to plan ahead as parking on campus will be a challenge Thursday, Oct. 16, due to a weekday home football game against Utah, beginning at 7 p.m.

Some lots will be restricted to those with game day passes after 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16. OSU parking permit holders will be allowed to park in any A, B, or C zone, regardless of their permitted zone, but some parking lots will be closing midday to employees and students to accommodate ticket holders.

A free shuttle to and from campus will be offered to anyone who parks at the Benton County Fairgrounds beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday morning through 2 a.m. Friday morning after the game. The drop-off point on campus is 30th and Washington. During peak hours, the shuttle will run at least every 30 minutes (see map) This service will also be provided to residence hall permit holders. The OSU Beaver Bus service will run on its normal schedule.
Beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, some parking lots must be vacated by OSU permit holders and will be open only to those with athletics-issued game-day parking passes. These include:
  • All Reser Stadium parking lots;
  • The Gill lot;
  • The parking garage at 26th Street and Washington;
  • and the South Farm parking lot off Brooklane Road.
Other parking areas (listed below) will be available until 3 p.m. for regular faculty/staff business day parking. After 3 p.m., however, entrance to these areas will be limited only to people with athletics-issued game-day parking permits. Employee and student vehicles already parked in these lots may remain until 5 p.m., at which time all vehicles without athletics-issued passes must vacate. Signs will be posted at the entrance of these lots.

These include:
  • Lots between 15th Street and 11th Street, off Washington Way;
  • The Benton Place parking lots east of Goss Stadium;
  • Lots off Washington Way adjacent to the Student Legacy Park (intramural fields);
  • The 30th Street parking lots around Peavy Hall, between Jefferson Street and Washington Way;
  • The 30th Street parking lot by Magruder Hall;
  • The 35th Street parking lot at the OSU Foundation building;
  • The lot off 15th Street and Western Boulevard at the University Plaza building.
Residents with permits can park on the 5th floor of the parking garage or in the east or west side BR lots during the game day closures. Residents must move cars from the gravel CR lot south of the Hilton Garden Inn, to avoid being towed.

RVs will be allowed after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the gravel lot off 35th and Campus Way, next to the Motor Pool. Employees and students who normally park in this location, should give themselves extra time Thursday morning to locate a parking space as many may be filled with recreational vehicles. RV’s are not permitted on campus in any other lot.
A map of Thursday, Oct. 16, parking areas and restrictions is available online.

On every game day, including weekend days, be sure to move your car out of the “Orange Lots” which are tow-away zones. Link to map.

Thanks for your patience; be careful as you navigate campus on game day; and Go Beavs!

Block Party celebrates new home of Black Cultural Center

A “block party” celebration of the Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center, which is currently under construction, will take place Oct. 17 at the center, located at 2320 S.W. Monroe Ave.

The event will be from 5:15-7 p.m., as a street party featuring a DJ, bouncy inflatables that can accommodate adults, and free food including pulled pork sandwiches. Those planning to attend are encouraged to RSVP by emailing or by calling 541-737-4717.

“This is one of many great events we’re putting on this year at the BCC,” said Dominique Austin, assistant director for the center. Austin said the block party ties in with the center’s theme for this year, which is creating a culture of excellence within the black community at OSU and a welcoming atmosphere for all students.

“The BCC is not only for black students, but is open to the whole OSU community,” Austin said. “All students are welcome. You don’t have to identify as black. We have a very diverse staff at the BCC, and we’re committed to recruiting and retaining students from all backgrounds.”

The BCC, as it is known, is one of four OSU cultural centers getting a new home to replace its former aging building. The Native American Longhouse moved into a new building in 2013, and the Cesar Chavez Centro Cultural opened the doors of their new building in 2014. The new Asian and Pacific Cultural Center is currently under construction. The four cultural centers are being funded with a combination of private gifts and university funds.

Groundbreaking for the BCC took place in June, 2013, but construction was delayed after workers found that groundwater and soil about eight feet below grade had been contaminated by fuel from an unknown source, possibly many years ago.

The event, which is sponsored by Be WellOSU Healthy Campus Initiatives and Recreational Sports, celebrates Beaver Nation’s commitment to health and well-being. The run/walk kicks off at 3:30 p.m.

It’s a party atmosphere, and it really emphasizes that physical activity can be fun and social as well.”

The long course takes runners out Campus Way past the covered bridge and almost to the fairgrounds and back, while the short course ends by the east greenhouses on Campus Way and circles back around.

Registration is free and those who pre-register are guaranteed to receive a T-shirt. Pre-registration is encouraged to avoid lines the day of the event.

Register online. Check in for the event and day-of registration will be available on site in the Memorial Union Quad starting at 3 p.m. on the day of the event.

Get your order to go with Eco2Go

The Eco2Go program at UHDS Dining Centers allows you to use a reusable to-go food container and get 20 cents off each meal, and is sponsored by UHDS, Campus Recycling and the Sustainability Office.

Why join? Eco2Go is:
  • Eco-friendly. Reduce your impact on the environment.
  • Economical. Get 20 cents off each purchase in your container (Use it 3-4 times per week and it pays for itself in 1 term!).
  • Convenient. A durable container that is perfect for people on the go.
How It Works:
Step 1: Buy token. Purchase a token (equivalent to one Eco2Go container) for $7 at the dining center register.

Step 2: Exchange token for container. Give your token to your food server and they will pack your food in an Eco2Go container.

Step 3: Receive discount. Get 20 cents off your total purchase each time you use an Eco2Go container. (Use it 3-4 times/week and it will pay itself off in 1 term.)

Step 4: Return container for token. After giving your container a quick rinse, return it in the bin at the dining center register in exchange for a token.

Step 5: Repeat! Continue trading tokens and containers each time you eat.

Weekend Homestay Opportunity

The OSU Homestay Program is pleased to announce a Weekend Homestay program that will occur this year. International students living in UHDS facilities are able to apply to have a homestay experience with a local family one weekend between Week 3 and Week 10 of the term. During their weekend homestay, students spend time with a family living in Corvallis or the surrounding area (Corvallis, Philomath, or Albany). Each family provides a unique experience for the student. Some may choose a typical American weekend of activities around Corvallis, while others choose to take a trip to an Oregon tourist destination.

On Friday evening, families pick up the student from a location on-campus, and return the student to campus on Sunday afternoon. All meals during that time are provided by the family.  Families also provide bedding and towels for the student. Students are expected to interact with their host family and share their culture. Hosts understand that many students are at OSU to learn English, and will try to help students work on their language skills during the experience.

Cost for the weekend program is $100 and will be applied to OSU student accounts after placement has been accepted.

If you are interested in a weekend homestay experience, please fill out the application. Please email OSU Homestay with any questions you may have.

Human vs. Zombies

Humans versus Zombies, a student-led activity, will be taking place Friday Oct. 24 starting at 12:00 a.m  and continuing through Sunday Nov. 2 at 11:59 p.m., on the grounds of campus.  This outdoor-only tag game features teams of students as humans and zombies, all wearing identifiable head and arm bands with the letters HVZ on them.  Players will be carrying brightly colored Nerf toy blasters.  Game moderators will be wearing identifiable arm and headbands.  Any students or staff with concerns should contact Campus Public Safety non-emergency number, 541-737-3010.  Students participating in this event are also asked to stop what they are doing if a campus community member requests them to do so.

(The game has been played every year on campus since 2008.  The first demo of the game was played only at Wilson Hall in 2008, with the first campus wide game in 2009.)

For more information email or visit the HVZ website at www.osundead.com.

Share your OSU pride

Oregon State University is one of only two U.S. universities designated a land-, sea-, space- and sun-grant institution. OSU is also Oregon’s only university to hold both the Carnegie Foundation’s top designation for research institutions and its prestigious Community Engagement classification. Its approximately 27,000 students come from all 50 states and more than 90 nations. OSU programs touch every county within Oregon, and its faculty teach and conduct research on issues of national and global importance. Last year OSU’s research enterprise achieved its second highest level of funding support ever – $285 million in total grants and contracts to support work in public health, the environment, advanced engineering and projects to help develop Oregon’s and the nation’s economy.
