The recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the largest in history, having claimed over 4,000 lives. In addition to the aid workers, doctors and charities working to contain the virus, there is another group of trained professionals you might not have heard of: Data Scientists.
Right now, scientists trained in data analytics are working with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to collect and analyze data from mobile phones in the region. That data is then used to help authorities establish prime locations for treatment centers and identify new outbreaks in communities. This isn’t the first time data analytics has been called upon to improve public health either. Data analytics is being used, or has been used, to fight Cholera in Haiti, Malaria in Kenya, to assist in lead inspection programs in Chicago and the list goes on.
Data analytics is the application of fundamental scientific principles towards the analysis of large, complex data sets. Practitioners in this rapidly growing field have expertise that cuts across core disciplines of computer science, mathematics and statistics, as well as critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills. The application of data analytics to "Big Data" is revolutionizing the way we understand and interact with the world and it is for all of these reasons that a major in Data Analytics is in demand.

Data analytics is a new — uniquely interdisciplinary — major with academic partnerships that cannot be found in any other major on campus. Majors receive a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from the College of Arts and Sciences through curricular partnerships with the College of Engineering, the College of Medicine and the Fisher College of Business. Three areas of specialization exist within the major with additional areas of focus within the specializations.
