This Week in Women's History:
  • October 20, 1740 – Maria Theresa takes the throne of Austria. France, Prussia, Bavaria and Saxony refuse to honor the Pragmatic Sanction and the War of the Austrian Succession begins.
  • October 21, 1945 – Women vote in parliamentary elections in France for the first time.
  • October 22, 612 – Sak K’uk’ ascended to the throne of the Maya state of Palenque. She ruled until her son reached his maturity at age 12 on July 29, 615. She seems to have continued to have influence until her death in 640.
  • October 23, 1915 - 25,000-33,000 women march on Fifth Avenue in New York City for women's suffrage.
  • October 24, 1901 - Annie Edson Taylor becomes the first person to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel on her 63rd birthday.
  • October 24, 1910 - Blanche Stuart Scott (Betty) is the first woman to fly in a public exhibition event in the U.S. as a member of the Glenn Curtiss exhibition team. She became a stunt pilot with the nickname "Tomboy of the Air."

Orange is the New Black
Mondays at 12:30 in Memorial Gym 109
Join us on our comfy couches as we watch episodes of the hit series! Orange is the New Black follows Piper Chapman, a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison after being convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting money for her drug-dealing girlfriend. Join us to meet all the characters she comes into contact and to see how she copes! All are welcome. Popcorn provided!


Body rEvolution Presentations Now Available!
Body image issues and eating disorders disproportionately affect college-age students. Body rEvolution is activism in action! This education and outreach program is a dynamic, interactive one-hour presentation by peer educators in the Body rEvolution internship. Body rEvolution gets students talking about body image, the media's influence, and potential outcomes and impacts for their health and well-being. New Campus Chapter of the American Association for University Women
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. AAUW has been empowering women as individuals and as a cojmunity since 1881. For more than 130 years, AAUW has worked as a national grassroots organization to improve the lives of millions of women and their families. Interested in joining a new UI chapter? Come to an informational meeting on Tuesday, October 21 at 5:00 pm in Room 105 of the College of Law. Current AAUW members will be there to talk about the organization and membership benefits. Dr. Erin Chapman will lead us into a deeper discussion of sexual anatomy, including the pleasures and potentials of what you can do with your bits and pieces. All are welcome to attend. Snacks provided.


THIS WEEK!! Open Auditions for Any One of Us: Words From Prison
October 24, 6 - 8 pm and October 25, 12 - 2 pm, Arena Theater of Shoup Hall

Written by Eve Ensler, Any One of Us: Words From Prison reveals the connection between women in prison and the violence that often brings them there. This event is presented by the Women's Center's V-Day College Campaign and will bring forth raw voices of fierceness and honesty written by women from prisons across the nation. All are welcome to audition. No theater experience required. Contact Bekah with questions.

Women and Gender Brown Bag Series
October 28, 12:30 - 1:30 pm in the Panorama, Commons

Join us for "Promotion to Full Professor: Does Gender Matter?" with Dr. Craig Chatriand. This presentation will focus on a study that analyzed promotion from associate professor to full professor. This study examined how gender and academic discipline impacted promotion to full professor. All are welcome. Please bring your lunch!

Fornication Forum: Find the Facts
October 28, 8 - 9 pm in the Chief's Lounge, SUB

Find the answers to all of your sexual health questions in one location! In honor of Sexual Health Awareness Month, special guests from around campus and the community will attend to answer any questions in this fun, laid back environment. Join us for discussion, snacks, giveaways, and more!


Warm Up for Winter: Community Clothing Swap
November 8 from 9 am to 2 pm

Start gathering gently-used winter clothing, and children's books and toys, for a Community Clothing Swap at the University of Idaho's Apartment Community Center, located at 502 Taylor Avenue. Please bring donations the night before on Friday, November 7 from 5 pm to 8 pm, so we can sort the donations. Additional campus locations to drop off donations include the Women's Center, the Career Center, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the Dean of Students Office. All volunteer help and donations are gladly welcomed both days. The Non-Traditional Student Association will be there to help you and your family find new clothes for your growing family and to give back to others! LGBT Book Club
Memorial Gym 109, 7:15 - 8 pm, Every Second Thursday of the Month

  • Sin by Silence
    October 21 at 7 pm in the Borah Theater

    Join UI Violence Prevention Programs for the first film in their Big Change film series. From behind prison walls, Sin by Silence reveals the lives of extraordinary women who advocate for a future free from domestic violence. Against all odds, the Convicted Women Against Abuse rise to expose the stigma of domestic violence and the role we all must play in preventing this tragedy.

     
  • October Rainbow Flicks
    Rainbow Flicks will feature a documentary or feature film related to LGBTQA identities. The first Rainbow Flicks film, Geography Club, will occur October 21 at 7 pm in TLC 028. Geography Club is a comedy-drama based on the Brent Hartinger novel of the same name. It follows a group of high school students of varying sexual orientation who form an after-school club as a discreet way to share their feelings and experiences. All are welcome to attend.

     
  • 2014 LGBTQA History Month Keynote - Wade Davis
    October 22, 7 pm, Administration Auditorium

    The LGBTQA Office is excited to welcome Wade Davis to campus! Wade Davis is an openly gay former NFL corner-back who has played for the Tennessee Titans and the Seattle Seahawks. He is the current Executive Director of the You Can Play Project, an organization dedicated to ending discrimination and homophobia in sports and co-founder of the You Belong Sports Initiative for LGBTQ youth. Don't miss this thought-provoking keynote on issues related to sports, LGBTQA identities, masculinity, and many other topics. Free and open to the pubic! All are welcome!

     
  • Celebrating Wilderness: Women and Wilderness Reception and Panel
    October 24, 5 pm at the Third Street Gallery

    Join the City of Moscow Arts Commission, Idaho Humanities Council, the Great Old Broads of the Wilderness, and the Latah County Library District for a  reception and panel discussion to follow about women and the wilderness featuring Jane Holman, Debbie Lee, Sarah Swett, and Sarah Walker.

     
  • Inspiring and Supporting First-generation Students with Angel Flores
    October 27, 7 pm in the Vandal Ballroom

    Angel Flores is an inspirational speaker, an author, and a college instructor. He is the son of migrant farm workers, and is a first-generation college graduate who has inspired thousands of people all over the country by sharing his unique life journey.     The Center for Volunteerism and Social Action is looking for a student to fill this part-time position.
