“Strong Men, Keep a-Comin On”
produced by Dwight R. B. Cook

featuring
Bass-baritone Vincent Dion-Stringer
Pianist Samuel Springer
Djembe player Evander McLean
Dancer Richard Keller III
    “Strong Men, Keep a-Comin’ On” is an original musical production based on the poetry and music of African American women and men and performed by artists and faculty members of Morgan State University, a historically Black university with an acclaimed music program and state of the art performance and production facilities.

    The title of the piece is drawn from the 1931 poem by Sterling Allen Brown, first poet laureate of the District of Columbia. The piece showcases the work of African American composers Betty Jackson King, Margaret Bonds and Lena McKLin. The poetry of Maya Angelou will play a central role in the production.

    The venue for the premiere performance will be the historic Sanctuary of the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore. This architectural masterpiece of Maximilien Godefroy is the oldest extant building in the United States constructed for Unitarian services of worship. It is the site where William Ellery Channing delivered the address, “Unitarian Christianity” in 1819, the second most widely circulated philosophical document in the United States before 1840. The people of First Unitarian have been involved in the cultural life of Baltimore since the days when member George Peabody founded his Conservatory of Music, and organist Katherine E. Lucke founded the Handel Choir of Baltimore.

Clothing Drive

The Poverty and Homelessness Ministry is kicking off a clothing drive for the women at Dayspring, which we are calling "Suits Me Just Fine".  As you change your wardrobe over from summer to winter clothing, we urge you to set aside some garments that would be appropriate for women who would be going on job interviews and beginning new jobs. They don't need to be suits: we are looking for casual business-like outfits that will create a good impression.  Scarves, shoes, purses and jewelry will also be welcome.

We will also be collecting clean, usable children's clothing for the children who live at Dayspring.

Please bring the clothing to the "Suits Me" table at coffee hour, starting this Sunday. We need a volunteer each week to staff the table, and others to sort and hang the clothing for the event at Dayspring when women will be able to select outfits. Questions? Volunteer to help? Email Barbara Svoboda at svob@comcast.net.

The Clare Milton Stewardship Award

The Board of Trustees is now taking nominations for the Clare Milton Stewardship Award, given annually to a member of the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore who has demonstrated uncommon devotion to the stewardship of the church and its resources over a period of 20 years or more.

To be eligible for the award, the member must meet the following criteria:

-- Member of the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore for at least 20 years;
-- A consistent record of pledging and financial support of the church (Please note that the amount is not a criterion; consistent support of the church financially to the best of one's ability is);
-- Multiple/sustained leadership positions held, e.g. Board of Trustees service, committee chair, religious education leader;
-- Actively seeks opportunity for services and volunteers for a variety of tasks (even small, unglamorous jobs, such as picking up the trash);
-- Proven responsibility and accountability for his or her actions;
-- Supports the service of others by identifying leadership ability in others and mentoring;
-- Actively involved in the larger community--neighborhood/city/state/national level--in a manner consistent with UU philosophy and principles.

To nominate one or more people who meet the 20-plus year membership requirement (a list of those eligible is attached), please email your nomination to Board Secretary Juliana Bell at julianabell23@gmail.com by Friday October 10, 2014 or mail to Clare Milton Stewardship Award, c/o Juliana Bell, Secretary,  First Unitarian Church of Baltimore, 1 West Hamilton Street, Baltimore, MD 21201, to be received no later than Friday October 10, 2014.  Please include a short description of why you believe the candidate merits selection for the award, identifying achievements in the categories listed above.

Previous recipients of the award were: Clare Milton, Esther (Teri) & Robert Smith, Lauralee & Richard Humphrey, Christine Beard, Helen Szymkowiak and Dorothy Critcher.

The Board will consider nominations for the award at its October 15th  meeting.  The winner or the award will be announced from the pulpit.

Our Change for Change Partner for September

Our Change for Change partner during September & October is Gather Baltimore, an innovative program that collects unsold vegetables, fruit and bread from the Baltimore Farmers Market and other sources for redistribution to local meal programs, faith communities and others in need.  Gather Baltimore insures this food does not become waste and is made available to financially challenged families in communities where fresh healthy food is not readily accessible.

More information is available at the Social Action Clearinghouse table during Coffee Hour.

Please join the families of Dayspring for rewarding work and community. You are welcome to help for all or part of the day. We will be laying down newspapers and spreading mulch to create a weed barrier and a safer environment. We will also be planting many of the perennials that have been so generously donated. So bring your newspapers, perennials, gloves, shovels, and rakes (will provide if you cannot bring) and let's get our hands dirty!

Over the summer we had a visit from Tim Franklin (who grew up in our church). He was letting us know that his mom (long time member Paula Franklin) had moved back to Baltimore. She is living at Broadmead and would love visits from people she knows. (Note that she has short term memory loss now.)

Volunteers Needed

We are in need of a few volunteers to donate 1-2 hours of their time every Friday to help assemble the Order of Service. This job will entail folding, cutting, and collating the Order of Service.

We are also in need of a few volunteers that could be available to open/close the building for rentals and  to be present and assist the renters with any needs they may have.

Training will be provided to anyone who volunteers to help out with these tasks.

If you are interested in one of these opportunities, please contact Aubrey Reigh in the church office at office@firstunitarian.net
