“Strong Men, Keep a-Comin On”
produced by Dwight R. B. Cook
featuring
Bass-baritone Vincent Dion-Stringer
Pianist Samuel Springer
Djembe player Evander McLean
Dancer Richard Keller III
“Strong Men, Keep a-Comin’ On” is an original musical production based on the poetry and music of African American women and men and performed by artists and faculty members of Morgan State University, a historically Black university with an acclaimed music program and state of the art performance and production facilities.
The title of the piece is drawn from the 1931 poem by Sterling Allen Brown, first poet laureate of the District of Columbia. The piece showcases the work of African American composers Betty Jackson King, Margaret Bonds and Lena McKLin. The poetry of Maya Angelou will play a central role in the production.
The venue for the premiere performance will be the historic Sanctuary of the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore. This architectural masterpiece of Maximilien Godefroy is the oldest extant building in the United States constructed for Unitarian services of worship. It is the site where William Ellery Channing delivered the address, “Unitarian Christianity” in 1819, the second most widely circulated philosophical document in the United States before 1840. The people of First Unitarian have been involved in the cultural life of Baltimore since the days when member George Peabody founded his Conservatory of Music, and organist Katherine E. Lucke founded the Handel Choir of Baltimore.

Clothing Drive
The Poverty and Homelessness Ministry is kicking off a clothing drive for the women at Dayspring, which we are calling "Suits Me Just Fine". As you change your wardrobe over from summer to winter clothing, we urge you to set aside some garments that would be appropriate for women who would be going on job interviews and beginning new jobs. They don't need to be suits: we are looking for casual business-like outfits that will create a good impression. Scarves, shoes, purses and jewelry will also be welcome.
We will also be collecting clean, usable children's clothing for the children who live at Dayspring.
Please bring the clothing to the "Suits Me" table at coffee hour, starting this Sunday. We need a volunteer each week to staff the table, and others to sort and hang the clothing for the event at Dayspring when women will be able to select outfits. Questions? Volunteer to help? Email Barbara Svoboda at svob@comcast.net. |
