Thank You Mariah Smith!
Apparently not everyone saw our thank you back on October 1, so it is being restated this week (and we can’t thank Mariah enough!).  Mariah Smith Photography generously donated all the net proceeds from our recent portrait days. That donation ended up being $7,418.16!  This incredible gift to the school will be used for the beautification of the area between the classroom buildings, in front of the library, so it will be a gift that will be enjoyed by children, parents, and staff, both now and into the future. Much, much gratitude to you Mariah!

SunRidge Secures Long Term Lease!
Last Thursday night, the Twin Hills Union School District board and the Sebastopol Union School District board each approved a new lease for the town campus for SunRidge School. The new lease will begin when our current lease ends on June 30, 2015, and is a full 10-year lease, and at a cost very close to the current lease. This approval comes after many months of negotiations where both districts listened to each other and came to agreement on a host of terms. As with all things negotiated, compromises were made on both sides, but overall, SunRidge will be well served by the results.  We owe much gratitude to both school boards and superintendent Barbara Bickford for her efforts in securing a long-term lease for our growing school. With this new lease, we now have a more permanent home and can more earnestly invest our time, energy, and resources into its long-term care and beauty. To SunRidge's thriving future!

Old Dinghy Wanted For Play
The playground design committee is looking for a small boat that can be turned into a imaginative play space near the sandbox. Should be small (6-10 feet long) and preferably wood. Does not need to be sea worthy!  Contact Mark with any ideas or leads.

Portrait Make up/Retake Day
Wednesday, October 22 is Portrait Make-up/Retake Day.  If your child was absent on Portrait Day be sure to pick up an order form from the office.  Send the completed form (don't forget to include sales tax) with your child on Wednesday, the 22nd.  If you would like your child's portrait retaken on make-up day be sure to return the original order with your child, along with a $5 service fee.  Please write what you would like done differently on the order form or on a note attached to the returned order and return the package to the office by Friday, October 17th in order to give Mariah time to plan.

Walk and Roll Day a Big Success! From Rebecca Davenport
Way to go, SunRidge! Last Wednesday morning, a whopping 100 of our students arrived to school on foot, on bikes, and on scooters. It was perfect weather for being outside, and many of us gathered near the Vets Building, along with Reach students and other school groups, and heard pep talks and safety tips from the police chief, mayor, and vice-mayor, before parading down (actually, up!) High Street to school. There were plenty of students arriving on foot and on bikes from other directions, too, as they often do any day of the week, and there was at least one family who biked to the country campus. Appreciation goes out to Oona Padgett, Kenna Lee, and Honora Russell for volunteering, and to those who donated snacks.
It was a fun morning, and there was a lot of interest in having Walk and Roll day more than once a year, so stay tuned....
Affinity Programs
Many companies provide an incentive to shop with them by donating a percentage of your purchase to a charity of your choice. It is quick and easy to sign up and does not cost you any additional money. Our goal this year is to increase money raised from the affinity programs by 20%. This money will be used to support the variety of specialty programs that enrich our children’s learning experience. In previous weeks we provided information about the Target card and eScrip. Below, we announce the return of Whole Foods scrip cards. These programs require nothing other than taking the time to sign up, or purchase a card, and then just do your shopping as usual. A school community has a lot of purchasing power and these store donations really add up, so please share this information with friends and family to support our children’s education.
Whole Foods Scrip Cards are Back!
Purchase $25 or $100 Whole Food gift cards at school and SunRidge will earn 3% when you shop with them at Whole Foods Market. These cards are available in the school office and will also be sold at drop off and pick up in the parking lot. Days and times will soon be announced.
Lost and Found Requests from Hassanah Meechan
1) PLEASE MARK YOUR CHILD’S CLOTHING! Put their name (last name is best) and “SR” on it so that we know it is a SunRidge student. Items marked can be easily returned to their classroom hook. Unmarked items go into the lost and found racks.
2) Are you finding yourself with five minutes after drop off or pick up? Perhaps you can be the new lost and found tender. If you do, consider taking this task on and helping out your child’s school in that way (training available!!). Please, email Mark and the job is yours.
SunRidge After School Sports News from Mr. T.
Coed Volleyball winds up this Saturday, October 18th, with a tournament at Sonoma Academy for the 8th grade team only, 9am to possibly 4pm, depending on success.
Boys' Basketball is beginning!  The Vikings' first practice was this week.  We will be playing with one team at the 8th grade level this year.  SunRidge needs help with home games, running the clock and keeping score.  Let Mr. T know if you can help with this.

Community Events

For the Birds
Are you curious about the sounds and sights of local and migrating birds you see all around you? SunRidge parent, Rudy Yakzan, will be conducting a monthly Bird Walk in Sebastopol and other local areas to familiarize parents and children with the local and migrating birds and to learn more about what we can do to enjoy and protect our feathered friends and other animals.
The walks will start Saturday, October 25 from 9-11AM on the country campus and they will be held monthly on a Saturday schedule after that.  We will also conduct a Christmas Bird Count (CBC) in the middle of December at
both campuses in the hope of starting this tradition each year.  The CBC is a national tradition that dates more than 100 years and other than its scientific value, it brings communities together to enjoy and appreciate birds and the environment we all share. The walks and the CBC welcome everyone in the family including grandparents and other siblings and they will be a great activity for our children of all the grades and Kindergarten. Bring appropriate clothing and snacks, if needed. Rudy will bring some binoculars and a spotting scope. Please bring a binocular if you have one. For more info, contact Rudy at oceanprises@aol.com."

Sprites Night at Summerfield Waldorf School & Farm- Saturday, October 25th

Sprites Night is Summerfield’s annual alternative to the commercialism and ‘sugary focus’ of Halloween. Lower School classes present whimsical scenes along the beautifully lit Pumpkin Path, with warm food & drinks and a roaring bonfire!
Tickets are necessary to go on a tour of the scenes along the Pumpkin Path.  The cost is $7 each and will be available starting Monday, October 20th in the Main Office. The “journey” on the pumpkin path takes around 40 minutes, and the groups leave every 5 minutes- your tickets will be for a specific tour so please be on time! The first tour starts at 5:30 and the last leaves at 7:30 from the fountain in front of the Main Office  The meal, prepared by our 8th graders, will be served from 5:00 on.

We encourage everyone to dress up in costume and children to bring a little bag for a few treasures & treats, but please- no scary, overly commercial, or otherwise inappropriate costumes.  We look forward to catching you in our web for this enchanting school event!
