A Word from the Frontlines: Christa Gibler

Christa has been serving in Haiti with Child Hope in Haiti since 2012. She has run our jewelry making program and gift shop at the Transition Home for the past few years, as well as faithfully discpled and loved on many of our kids. She shares below about a recent interaction she witnessed between a father and son that touched her heart. Read her full blog post here

A few weeks ago, the kids in our home put on a soccer tournament. It included our boys and girls from the homes, the community kids that lead our feeding program three times a week, as well as some other kids from the area.

In a way, soccer is a snapshot of their lives. They are responsible for getting the ball in the goal - achievement. They have control, yet they have opposition right in front of them; they are making choices on their own, but not always able to take the easy route. But they also have us cheering them on, standing beside them; those who care and love them whether they succeed or fail. But what if no one was there on the sidelines? What if no one saw the progress they made in the game, or even over time as their skill improved?

All of a sudden the feeding program took the lead and the whistle blew. FEEDING PROGRAM WINS THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!

At first I was a little bummed because our kids played so well, but I quickly saw something that I will never forget. The high scorer, Smith turned when he heard the whistle blow and streams of tears started glistening down his face. He beelined it straight into the corner, where I watched him leap into his fathers arms like a toddler. He wrapped his whole body around his father’s torso and in adoration and delight, his father held Smith's head and slowly walked across the field with him in a tender embrace. Immediately tears welled up in my eyes and my heart was overwhelmed. Smith had someone on the sideline, someone cheering him on and celebrating his victory with him...
