Desire has been identified as a philosophical problem since Antiquity with multiple trajectories and varying degrees of opinions and beliefs. Plato argues that individual desires must be postponed in the name of the higher ideal. In Buddhism, craving is thought to be the cause of all suffering. While others maintain desire is necessary to motivate humans to action. In psychology, desire is often described as different from emotions because desires arise from bodily structures and functions while emotions arise from a person's mental state. For Lacan "desire is neither the appetite for satisfaction nor the demand for love, but the difference that results from the subtraction of the first from the second." Hence desire can never be satisfied, or as Slavoj Žižek puts it "desire's raison d'être is not to realize its goal, to find full satisfaction, but to reproduce itself as desire."

Whatever the specific cases may be, desire's primary relationship is to that of lack and wanting. And capitalism has survived and thrived by exploiting our feelings of lack and of not being enough, continuously churning out an atmosphere of dissatisfaction to the point where our biological cells have now become capitalists cells. It's time we adventure within our desires in order to change our gene expression to that of abundance and revolution!
