ACT government pays out $6.6 million in damages after explosion

In December 2009 an explosion occurred when deodorant cans were placed in a shredding machine at a waste disposal SteriHealth facility in Mitchell ACT. Three electrical contractors were moving cable through a tunnel connecting the SteriHealth building to Revlon's neighboring premises where aerosol cans were being fed into a shredder. When the cans exploded in the machine, the men received burns to their faces, hands and bodies and internal burns from inhaling the combustible material.

The men and their mothers took Revlon, SteriHealth (operator of the waste disposal facility) and the ACT Government owned Capital Linen Services to court for failing to manage a substantial risk of harm.

The lawyers alleged:
- Revlon did not tell SteriHealth that waste collected included pressurised aerosols
- Revlon did not have a sorting system preventing pressurised cans entering their disposal stream
- Revlon knew, or should have known, the risks involved in the disposal of their products

The man most effected received a payout of $2.6 million, another man $2.1 million and the third man, $1.9 million. The mothers of two of the men also received $175,000 and $250,000.
