Doctors urge action on poverty to cut levels of child mortality
Medics from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in Scotland claim inequality and deprivation are key factors in the country's child mortality level and they have urged the Scottish Government to make a series of policy changes in a bid to cut it.  Poverty and disadvantage are key drivers in Scotland’s child mortality rates according medics who were cited in a report by the Herald.  More...

Call to aid low-income women in pregnancy
More needs to be done to help poorer women through pregnancy, experts have said after new research found they have a worse experience than better-off mothers-to-be. Researchers from Oxford University found the most deprived women were 60 per cent less likely to have received any ante natal care when compared to the richest women.    More...

Call for devolved welfare powers -submit your views
Voluntary sector leaders have made a call for devolved welfare powers as they prepare to contribute to the Smith Commission, which is looking at a new post-referendum settlement for Scotland.  SCVO is urging third sector organisations to submit views and proposals on further devolution of powers to the Scottish Parliament to feed into the Smith Commission.  More...

Communities issued children’s summit challenge
Communities up and down the country have a role to play in truly making Scotland “the best place to grow up”. Speaking at Education Scotland’s two-day Scottish Learning Festival at the SECC in Glasgow, Education Secretary Michael Russell announced that a Children and Young People’s Summit is to be held, to build on the “reaffirmed desire of millions of Scots to participate in democracy”.  More...

New early learning and childcare practice guidance
The Scottish Government has recently published national practice guidance on early learning and childcare — "Building the Ambition" — promoting high quality and good practice in delivery. The guidance has just been issued to all early learning and childcare providers.  Read the guidance

Forced marriage legislation
New legal protection comes into force.  Multi Agency Guidance intended to inform all frontline staff and volunteers within agencies who are likely to come across adults or children and young people threatened with or in a forced marriage.  Read more...

DWP 'Benefit Cap' statistics
The Touchstone blog has provided an analysis of recent DWP statistics on the benefit cap and those affected revealing that 73% of the people hit by the benefit cap are children.  More...

Legacy 2014 funding to help disadvantaged young people
Second phase of joint initiative with Sport Relief to help most disadvantaged.  Funding is now available under phase two of the Home and Away Programme, a joint initiative from the Scottish Government and Sport Relief, which aims to help the most disadvantaged children, who have limited opportunities, or face significant challenges,  by using sport as inspiration.  More...

Call to aid low-income women in pregnancy
Glasgow's Public Protection week is being held on 1st -5th December on the theme of 'Protection- it's everyone's business'.   This week is linked to the national Act against Harm, awareness winter campaign highlighting financial harm issues.   Small grant scheme is now open with maximum grant of £500.  More...
 
Kelly Family Charitable Trust support to family based projects
The Kelly Family Charitable Trust is open to applications from registered charities whose activities involve all or most family members in initiatives that support and encourage the family to work as a cohesive unit in tackling problems that face one or more of its members. The fund also welcomes applications from sports and health-related charities whose activities comply with the above criteria. Grants are of between £1,000 and £5,000, but higher grants may be considered.. The next closing date for applications is the 1st March 2015.  More...

BBC Children in Need Main Grant Programme
Funding is available to organisations that work with young people who are suffering from; illness; distress; abuse or neglect; are disabled; have behavioural or psychological difficulties; or are living in poverty or situations of deprivation. The Main grants programme is open to applications for grants of over £10,000. Deadline 15th January 2015.  More..
 
People's Postcode Trust - Small Grants Programme
Max. Value: £ 20,000. Funding is available for projects that advance citizenship or community development in England, Scotland, and Wales.

Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme 2014-2020
European Programme which aims to make people's rights and freedoms effective in practice by making them better known and more consistently applied across the EU. The programme also promotes the rights of the child and the principles of non discrimination and gender equality, including projects to combat violence against women and children.  Various programmes with deadlines December - January.  More...

Cost of the School Day project newsletter
The Cost of the School Day project is now underway in eight schools across Glasgow. Cost of the School Day is a Poverty Leadership Panel project, hosted by Child Poverty Action Group in Scotland and working with Glasgow City Council’s Education Services to identify poverty-related barriers to participation at school and practical ways to tackle them.   Read the newsletter..

Free training opportunity - Getting It Right for Every Child - An introduction
Everyone’s Children latest learning event will take place on 
22nd of October 2014  from  9.00am  till 1.00pm at the Albany Training Centre.   

This session will improve awareness of the aims and language of GIRFEC, Consider practical implications for smaller organisations.  It is aimed at small third sector organisations in Glasgow already working with children, families or young people who may have gaps in their knowledge. It is also suitable for new staff in third sector organisations where GIRFEC is already used and in other third sector contexts where knowledge of GIRFEC would be helpful as part of wider organisational roles.  To register for the event contact fariha.thomas@gcvs.org.uk. Parenting across Scotland 10th anniversary lecture: Supporting parents in an unequal society: ethics and evidence

In her lecture, Brid Featherstone, Professor of Social Work, Open University, will examine how services can support families in a humane way and build relationships to enable families to flourish, considering how inequality and poverty impact on families. Centre for Research on Families and Relationships
Self-harm, families and relationships: perspectives from practice and research
24th November, EDINBURGH, 12 – 4.15pm
This half-day conference brings together researchers, practitioners and decision-makers working on self-harm, to discuss the role and relevance of families and relationships in shaping how self-harm is practiced, understood and responded to.  While much existing work on self-harm focuses on medical treatment, and psychopathological interpretations, this conference will provide space for discussion and debate on social and relational perspectives.  More...

University of Edinburgh - The Abuse Seminars
Four Friday afternoon seminar conversations about aspects of gendered violence in Scotland with activists and campaigners, researchers, film makers and counsellors. These seminars offer a unique opportunity for committed and experienced colleagues to come together, take stock of work developed in Scotland and engage in dialogue about the future political, practice and research agenda relating to gendered violence in Scotland.
