A lot is going on at Idaho Smart Growth as fall settles in. We have been visiting and training in several parts of the state—our thanks to everyone who have met with us! Our work to transform transportation policy, Moving Idaho Forward, included a well-attended meeting this week of our Transportation Choices Coalition and an agreement to begin crafting strategies to improve funding for accommodating walking, bicycling and transit in Idaho. The group committed to meeting again soon and often. One transportation-related opportunity coming up soon is the election for two seats on the Ada County Highway District, and ISG is helping to draw attention to the races—see next item.
Boise Metro Chamber ACHD Candidates Forum: Thurs. Oct. 16, 9-10:30 am. Two seats on the five-member Ada County Highway District Commission will be filled in the November election and the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a forum with all candidates. ISG has assisted the chamber with this forum, which will be moderated by ISG President Kate Eldridge. The event is free, but online registration is requested. More information, including the ACHD districts map, here.
APA Idaho conference: Oct. 8-10. The APA Idaho Chapter annual conference is taking place in the Center on the Grove in Boise. ISG program staff are presenting in four sessions: Deanna is presenting Bicycle Network Connections; developing a network using existing roadways and simple implementation strategies; and
Building Partners with Charrettes, how charrettes engage all stakeholders as partners and why this is valuable. Elaine is presenting Partnerships Move Biking and Walking Forward, lessons learned from recent technical assistance; and Area of City Impact Revisited: The Value of Partnerships, along with the University of Idaho, ULI Idaho and other partners.
Older, Smaller, Better: the economic impact of historic buildings and neighborhoods. Join the Boise Arts & History Sesqui-Shop for a brown bag lunch with guest speaker Mike Powe, senior research manager from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Green Lab. Michal will discuss how planners, policymakers, and designers can leverage the unique fabric of small and midsize cities to strengthen local economies and foster distinctive commercial corridors. Oct. 10, 11:30 am at the Sesqui-Shop; 1008 Main St. Boise. Mike is in town for the APA-Idaho conference, where is is giving a keynote speech. Mike is also meeting with ISG during his time here.
Neighborhood 2 Market Harvest Ride, Boise and Nampa: Oct. 25. Help us celebrate the harvest season with our final Neighborhood 2 Market on Saturday, Oct. 25. We started the market season with a great group of folks for Boise Bike Week in May and we want to close the season with a festive harvest ride. To do this we need your help generating a ride/walk from you neighborhood or simply joining a ride. Contact us if you’d like to help in anyway. Coming SOON is a new N2M page on our website where you’ll find information about rides, dates etc.—also on our Facebook page.
Community Mobility Institute: Nov. 5-7. ISG is a local partner and trainer with the Sonoran Institute on this team training to help community leaders transform their transportation planning. The CMI will work with teams selected from several Idaho communities in an intensive workshop that builds leadership and practical understanding of ways to align transportation planning and community development in today’s economy.
