News from RPC - World Communion Sunday; Losing God
God as Waiter

"Losing God"

1 Samuel 4-7

My favorite illustration in this sermon is the one, from commentator Tim Chester, about how we treat God as a waiter. When you are eating in a restaurant you don't give much thought to the server. When you want something you want him to be right there and to be quick, efficient, and competent, and nice while we are at it. But when you have everything you need or want, you don't want her around. Ouch! Who doesn't treat God that way? I see too much of me in there.

And that is exactly how Israel was treating God in the early days of Samuel. God's glory had no weight. They ignored Him. Until they lost him, when the Philistines stole him. It s a great story, what happened when they put the ark of God in their own god's temple. And its a reminder of just what we have in God...

Sunday's Bulletin
Join in prayer against human trafficking in our city, Thursday at 7:00.  We will be hosting the Pastorious Project, an effort by churches in the Philadelphia area to work to end human slavery today in our own neighborhood. Philadelphia was the first city in North America to protest the injustice of slavery with the Germantown Protest of 1688.
Join with Christians throughout the Philadelphia region to pray for God’s rescue and restoration. This is the Northeast Region prayer gathering for the group. Call the Church Office for more information.

Bazaar.  We will be holding our Bazaar on November 8th from 9am – 2pm.  Do you have a small business?  If so, would you be interested in setting up a table at our Bazaar?  We will be setting up tables in the Upper Room for vendors.  It is a great opportunity for small business owners, crafters, cooks, hobbyists, etc. to make a little money and to help out the church.  Tell your friends and neighbors about the opportunity.  Tables cost $10 and a donation worth $25 of your product to our Silent Auction.  Please contact Jennifer Anderson, Jesse Barlow, Carol Catto, Joan Stewart, Jane Vanderleeuw or the church office for more info.

Praise Time is Coming!  The newly reformed Praise Team has been practicing together this month and will be leading a time of Praise from 10:35 – 11:00 on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, probably beginning in October.  While saying goodbye to Meghan McClain and Joe Medwid, Cheryl Lafferty, Kathy McGettigan and Becca McClain have joined the team!

Harvest Party.  We will be holding our Children’s Ministry Harvest Party on October 25th from 1:00 – 3:00 pm, in the Upper Room.  All kids ages 3 through 6th grade are welcome.  If you would be willing to donate candy for this event, please see Freda Fulton.

Interfaith Hospitality Network.  A great big thank you to everyone who participated in the program.  The families that lived here also wish to express their thanks for your hospitality.  They always tell me they love to come to Rhawnhurst.  Without your help we could not be as successful as we are.  I hope this program and the families blessed you as much as they did me.  Joy Lorah

Church Flowers.  Church flowers are available every week for only $15.00 per bouquet.  There is a sign-up sheet located on Deacon’s Table in Narthex.  Please also notify Rosemary Hargreaves re your flower request.
