Worship

October 19 - "Complicating Forgiveness," Oscar Sinclair
- One service at 10am

This week we will be exploring the complicated nature of forgiveness: its usefulness as a tool, but also the dangers of expecting it.  In the aftermath of terrible crimes such as the Holocaust, it is fair to survivors to hope they forgive? Can storytelling and narrative be valuable in themselves?"

Oscar Sinclair is in his final year of seminary at Wesley Theological School. He just completed Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and is a member at First Unitarian Church of Baltimore.

11:30am - Talk on Human Trafficking Issues

To the surprise of some, human trafficking is something that regularly takes place in Northern Virginia (NOVA). In fact, we are one of the top hubs of trafficking in the United States.

The Social Action Committee is sponsoring a one hour talk about human trafficking issues in the Northern Virginia area on Sunday, October 19th, beginning at 11:30.  A speaker from the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Task Force ( funded by a grant from the Justice Dept.) will discuss these concerns, leaving adequate time for questions and concerns  from the audience.

Information about Sunday's presentation:
Use of Power Point is for the presentation of facts and numbers; nothing graphic; terms/words are used such as "prostitution" as appropriate, which kids might ask a parent about; Fairfax County has developed a program akin to her talk targeting  13 to 17 year olds as this is also the most targeted group; the speaker will review her materials in view of the fact that some younger teens might attend.

1:30pm - Cornerstones 11th Annual Help the Homeless Walk

The Cornerstones (formerly Reston Interfaith) 11th annual “Help the Homeless Walk,” will start at the Embry Rucker Community Shelter at 1:30 pm Sunday October 19th.  On site registration will begin at 12:30 pm.  We advise you to pre-register at cornerstonesva.org/events  (click on the “Help the Homeless” link). Also, please bring in travel-sized toiletries for the shelter.

A Note from the Director of Lifespan Faith Development

Greetings UUCR members and friends,

I would like to share with you a project that our 1st-3rd grade CYFD class is doing.  Each child was given a small notebook and asked to record acts of kindness that they witness.  Some of these books are already pretty full, even though the children have only had them for a week.  In a month filled with news that—if possible—seems even direr than usual, now seems a very opportune time for intentionally noticing the good still around us.  Many of you may already practice this through gratitude journals, regular prayer, or mindfulness.

This month, I encourage you to take a page out of our children’s books, and adopt this practice, either for the first time or in a new way, refreshing your existing practice.  Black paper and chalk will be available in the foyer for you to take home and use as a chalkboard.  If you choose, tape the paper up somewhere in your home, and begin recording the acts of kindness you witness.  We will also have a “chalkboard” available in the hallway next to the library for this purpose.  In November, we will ask you to bring in your chalkboards (hopefully overflowing!) to put together in one unified memento of kindness and gratitude.

May you find joy in the luminous acts of kindness that surround us all.

In peace,
Courtney

Child Faith Development

Last weekend’s Children’s Chapel showed me what an amazing group of kids we have.  While discussing the problems of homelessness, UUCR’s children leapt at the chance to help, eschewing even the coveted playground time in favor of making a blanket for someone in need.  They were genuinely excited at the news that soon they would get to make lunches for people who needed food.  Next week, classes resume as usual.

YRUU

The busy-as-bees YRUU group will be participating in the Walk for the Homeless this upcoming weekend in between creating the Haunted House, planning a lock-in, and going to Kings Dominion.

Adult Faith Development

Annual Auction: "Falling for UUCR"
- Saturday, November 8, 2014

Saturday November 8 will be the UUCR annual auction.  Our theme this year is “Falling for UUCR.” In addition to being our church's largest fundraiser, it is a fun-filled evening that you cannot miss!  For a modest fee, you can enjoy food and drinks, listen to a live auctioneer, and bid on a variety of goods and services offered by members of the congregation including artwork, homemade jams, assorted specialty dinners, and even vacation getaways.  We will have activities for the kids, so bring the whole family.

Our auction website is now live!  Go to togetherauction.com/uureston to enter your bids online as well as check out what else is being offered.  Paper bid forms are also available at the sign-in corner.

All items offered come from members of the congregation.  Do you have a piece of artwork or some other decorative item that has been collecting dust in your basement?  Donate it to the auction.  Do you have a special talent such as gardening or computer skills?  Offer your services.  Do you love cooking and entertaining people in your home?  Offer to host a dinner.

The auction depends on a lot of people to help make it a success.  We especially need help in the following areas:  room setup the day of the auction, and food setup and cleanup.  To volunteer, contact Kathy Deligianis at kduucr@tuxers.net.

Dessert at the auction is provided by a bake sale, which also benefits our CYFD  program.  To sign up to bring something yummy for this event, contact Caroline Ewart at caroline.ewart@gmail.com

As the event "host" you will receive convenient RSVP notices and one of our UUCR Connect managers will activate your event for live posting.  If you are on a committee or in a group that has events to post on the site, and you would prefer not to post the event yourself, you can send the information to Tracey Sopp at tabs1994@gmail.com for posting.

*If you do NOT want your event posted on UUCR Connect (Meetup.com) please, also let Tracey know at tabs1994@gmail.com.
