Romaine Lettuce

Two of the main challenges suppliers are seeing in the crop is the darker green, leafier romaine plant and high core.  The heads are a bit loose and open and not cupping to form a heart.  The heart material is where the yellow color is, with the outer leaves carrying more of the green color.  Therefore, the lack of heart material in the plant causes the finished product to look mostly green since there is such a high percentage of the outer leaf ends up in the pack.Due to the warmer weather conditions the plants have been experiencing rapid growth and have been bolting.  This has created an unusually high seeder (core) growing within the center of the plant.  This forces the processors to cut away a larger portion of the bottom of the plant in order to limit the amount of core that ends up in the finished product. This also takes away from the lighter color green/yellow plant material.  Some yields per acre have been as low as 30%
