Beyond film, we want to celebrate African arts and culture in the broadest sense, so check out our events programme complementing our fabulous selection of films.

We kick off with a masterclass with the multi-talented Tala Hadid, director of our Opening Film, The Narrow Frame Of Midnight, hosted by the South London Gallery on Saturday, 1 November, at 12PM. Illustrated with exerts from her work, writer/director/photographer Tala Hadid will define what has informed and nourished the development of her aesthetics in this intimate masterclass. For those looking to climb the filmmaking industry ladder, the Film Africa 2014 Industry Forum on Sunday, 2 November, is a must. Held at the BFI Southbank for the second year running, this FREE event will host three panels and a networking lunch. This year our industry experts discuss co-production markets and co-financing opportunities and commercial prospects for independent filmmakers, including an opportunity for attendees to pitch their creative ideas to a panel of experts in The Restless Pitch, our closing session.

Since culture preservation is all about the younger generations, Film Africa is excited to present its annual Family Day on Saturday, 1 November, with FREE screenings, workshops and the African Market Corner, brought to you by Open The Gate. Suitable for children of all ages, activities will include an introduction to djembe drumming by NUMBI Arts and interactive story-telling by The Pelican Post, as well as a selection of beautifully made short films featuring the Boabab Award nominees Kanyekanye and Behind The Door.

Hosted in partnership with We The Peoples Film Festival, Film Africa 2014 presents a FREE workshop for young aspiring filmmakers on Saturday, 8 November. Documentary Filmmaking Unveiled will be facilitated by award-winning director Adeyemi Michael (who’s 2013 film SODIQ was screened at Film Africa 2013). Exclusively for 13 – 19 year olds, this practical workshop will introduce attendees to the “tricks of the trade”, encouraging them to discover the beauty of finding stories in the world around them.

This workshop is FREE and no booking is required. Just turn up on the day!

Those of you who are more academically inclined will be interested in the annual Africa Film Conference organised by our partners, the University of Westminster’s Africa Media Centre. Mozambican producer Pedro Pimenta and South African filmmaker Khalo Matabane will give keynotes for this year’s conference, entitled Documenting Africa: Creating Fact or Fiction Through the Lens. And what better way to unwind after a film than through some music? Our Film Africa LIVE! music nights this year include a live set by El Andaluz, the foremost exponents of classical Arabic and Andalusian music in London, and the Film Africa 2014 Closing party on Saturday, 8 November. Come and celebrate the end of the festival with an explosive set of the latest electronic tunes from Angola and South Africa, following the screening of music documentaries I Love Kuduro & Future Sound Of Mzansi.
