Director's Corner

At the end of lunchtime announcements in the refectory, the Headmaster often offers such welcome news as the IAC championships clinched this fall by the soccer and cross-country  teams (and calling a Free Dress day to celebrate). In noting such victories, he frequently invokes Canon Martin’s maxim that “when one is honored, all are honored.”

A recent lunch ended with the Headmaster announcing that four St. Albans teachers have cast a glow on their colleagues: Upper School Math teacher (and Department Chair) Colleen Dunn and History teacher (and Department Chair) Rob Shurmer were both nominated by former students for the University of Chicago's Outstanding Educator Award for their continued inspiration and dedication as educators and mentors, and English teacher Gene Campbell and Religion teacher Jim Ehrenhaft ’83 were nominated by members of the Class of 2014 for Stanford’s Teacher Tribute Initiative for their exceptional teaching.

Calvin Baker ’14 said about Mr. Campbell: “Over my freshman, sophomore, and senior years, Mr. Campbell astounded me with his eclectic knowledge base, his ability to inspire intellectual curiosity, and his mastery of directing class discussions.”  Tai Dinger ’14 had this to say about Mr. Ehrenhaft: “He shows that team ethics apply even to an individualized sport like cross-country, and he treats his students and his athletes each as starting quarterbacks, displaying an attitude of equality that defines his time at St. Albans.”

True learning is a collaborative experience that requires patience, selflessness, and passion: think of the teachers you had at St. Albans and how they engaged, influenced, and taught you. In listening to the Headmaster’s comments, speaking with faculty members and sitting with the boys at lunch, I’ve found that the exceptional commitment of the teachers and mentors that we knew as students is still very much at the heart of the School.  And it’s a big reason that St. Albans is such a special place. I thought that you should know that as well!

As always, my colleagues and I welcome your comments, suggestions, and questions. Please keep in touch!

Now in its fifth year, the tournament is named in honor of the Right Rev. John T. Annual Giving Supports Teachers and Learners

Alumni contributions to Annual Giving (AG) provide resources that allow St. Albans to hire and retain teachers who engage and inspire our students. During this time of reflection and thanksgiving, please consider making your gift this year in honor/memory of a teacher, coach, or mentor who inspired you (include your honoree’s name in the “notes” section of the online form). Should you have questions, or would prefer to give by phone, please call 202-537-6409.

Annual Giving, the first priority of the STRIVE Campaign, provides essential funds that sustain St. Albans’ unique teaching and learning environment. Every AG donor is also a donor to STRIVE. Alumni participation, at any level, is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks to hundreds of generous donors, STRIVE has passed the $25 million mark—half way there! The fields are at $15.4 million towards $20 million goal—we need and welcome all alumni support. To learn more, please visit the campaign web site or call David Shepard at 202-537-6427.

From the STA Archives

In 1984, during St. Albans’ 75th anniversary celebration, a few STA faculty, staff, alumni, and parents were interviewed about their experiences on the Close. Among those interviewed were Canon Martin, Pete Gordon, Virginia Martin, Alfred True, and Leroy Weaver. The audio tapes were recently digitized and edited for use on the School’s web site.

November Alumni Archives Puzzler
The School’s Archivist is in search of more information on the piece of furniture along the right side of the photo. Who owned it or gave it to the School? Where did it come from originally? What purpose did it serve in the Common Room?

Please send your responses to the Alumni Office at STA_Alumni@cathedral.org. Select responses and answers will be shared in December’s newsletter.
