Spooky Times in the Big City

Before we delve into this week's concert offerings in Southern Colorado, we'd like to take a moment to announce the first show in 2014/2015 Friends House Concerts series, which will kick off on Wednesday, November 12 with a very special performance from Richard Shindell.

Rocky Mountain Highway is delighted to present an evening with this fabulous singer-songwriter, who now lives in Argentina and does not tour the United States as often as he once did.  House concerts are absolutely the most intimate and engaging way to experience live music, and over the past fifteen years hosts Whitney and Marc Luckett have invited an amazing collection of artists to take the stage in their Skyway home.    We'll have more details next week, but suffice it to say that seating is very limited so you should reserve your place now by paying the $30 suggested donation soon.  More details can be found at the Friends House Concert website.

All Hallows' Eve and its companion Dia de los Muertos are always great occasions to get your freak on, and the fact that these holidays fall on a weekend makes the party that much bigger.  Even if you're not headed north to see major shows such as the three-night Widespread Panic run at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield or Dylan at the Bellco Theatre in Denver on Saturday, there are plenty of local opportunities to don a costume and join the mania at a concert near you.  Although there isn't a lot of national touring talent in the region, here are our ten awesome picks for the coming week.

1.  Grass It Up, Front Range Barbeque (Old Colorado City), Wed Oct 29 (7:30 pm, free).  An annual Halloween tradition on the west side, the Grass It Up costume party and bluegrass meltdown also features tapping of new microbrews from Duragno-based Ska Brewing.  Arrive early because the patio will be packed!

2.  T.G. Sheppard, Stargazers Theatre, Sat Nov 1 (8 pm, $30 adv, $35 day of show, $75 VIP).  You may remember T.G. Sheppard as the pop country star who racked up 15 number one hits in the '70s and '80s, or perhaps as the restaurateur who opened the now-defunct "T.G.'s North of the Border Cafe and Cantina" chain in Tennessee.  Either way, you can bet he will pull out all the classics for this post-Halloween throwdown.

3.  Kim Stone Trio, Soiree, Sat Nov 1 (8 pm, $10).  The Pikes Peak region is blessed to be the part-time home of bassist Kim Stone, whose performance credits include time spent with legendary smooth jazz bands Spyro Gyra and the Rippingtons.  For this rare performance at a brand new venue on south Tejon Street, Kim will be joined by jazz metal guitarist and educator Mitch Chmara and percussionist/drummer Kevin Smith.

4.  Moonhoney, Bristol Brewing, Fri Oct 31 (6 pm, free).  Costumes are definitely encouraged at the 20-year-old Colorado Springs microbrewery located in the Ivywild School, where you can dance the evening away to the gypsy tango cabaret sounds.

5.  Tejon Street Corner Thieves with Barrel House String Band, Jack Quinn's Pub, Sat Nov 1 (9 pm, free).  Jack Quinn's offers the great pairing of Guinness and Bass - the original Black and Tan.  Saturday is another great combination, two great bands for the price of none - a String Band Dia de los Muertos celebration!

6.  Roma Ransom, Front Range Barbeque (Old Colorado City), Mon Nov 3 (6 pm, free).  Don't miss the annual Art Show and Silent Auction fundraiser benefiting the Pikes Peak United Way, and get your holiday shopping done early with gifts available from 22 local artists.  Not to mention gypsy jazz from Roma Ransom!

7.  Noche de los Muertos, Venue 515 at the Manitou Art Center (Manitou Springs), Sat Nov 1 (7 pm, $20 adv, $25 day of show).  This fourth annual event presented by the Smokebrush Foundation and public radio station KRCC promises art, theater, music, dancing, revelry, pinatas, and psychic tarot paintings.  It's hard to figure out exactly who will be performing the music, but Moonhoney front man Ryan Flores is hosting this evening celebrating the afterlife.

8.  Los Rat Bastards, McCabe's Tavern, Sat Nov 1 (9 pm).  We have no idea whether there's a cover charge or even what type of music this band plays, but we love the name.  The Rat Bastards are reportedly touring as part of their "Rocking Dead" tour.

9.  Key of Joy, Kinfolks (Manitou Springs), Sat Nov 1 (8 pm, free).  This Fort Collins duo comprised of Lauren Joy and Mason Bassuk return to familiar stomping grounds with a new debut album, Gratitude, which was produced at North Star Studios.

10.  Blue Frog, 503W, Sat Nov 1 (8 pm, free).  Jammy goodness at the Gastro Pub next to Benny's Lounge on West Colorado Avenue, where incidentally Grateful Dead cover band Big Sky performs at the same time.  We are guessing that more than a few folks will be splitting time between the two venues!

And that's just the tip of the Jack o'Lantern - check out the Pikes Peak Concert Calendar for more options, right now with 12 shows listed on Friday and 9 on Saturday.  We do try to keep the calendar current, but as we all know the details are always subject to change.  Speaking of change, you may have heard of that Daylight Savings thing ending Saturday night . . . that means one extra hour to boogie!

Fall back, and get your spook on this weekend!!!!
